“I regret to have taken a gap in my career….” “Many companies tend to favour candidates who are employed and in high demand.” How do you work around this, when you have a gap in your career? If you change your mindset about this belief you can turn this around by realising that many employers view gap years/ months positively, seeing them as a sign of well-rounded individuals with diverse experiences. With a job market becoming very challenging in the Technology space - Saas, Fintech and other Software companies - I often come across job seekers who have over a 6 months gap. More than often this gap is because they can’t get a suitable role as quickly as they had wished. How do you make up for that and compete favourably with the “in high demand”candidates? Employers always like to see candidates pro-active and developing themselves. More than ever soft skills are becoming prevalent. Here are a few tips: ✅ Identify the gap in your skills for the next role you aspire doing. The current world is forcing people to be more and more computer-savvy, and with more soft skills. ✅ Try to invest in some courses with certifications, either on leadership, social-media, communication or on AI-related subjects that could help you in your new role. ✅ If your occupation allows you to do some contract work - even if paid very little -, try to get those contracts to show you don't lose contact with the work environment. ✅ Choose to do some voluntary work that develop your soft skills. ✅ Do a lot of market research in fields related to your future role. So that you can talk with gravitas of their market opportunities and challenges. ✅ Modify your LinkedIn profile and CV to make sure they reflect what you want next. ✅ Never lie about your gap time. Whether it’s to help sick relatives, or illness, or burnout, be opened about it but don’t dwell on it. The most important thing in talking about a gap time is to talk about it with confidence and show how it made you a stronger person with more soft skills. Or hard skills if you spend the time studying. If you need support with all of this, book a 30mn free call with me, by sending a DM with CAREER.
