So you may have heard that Amazon-owned WHOLE FOODS IS LAUNCHING A NEW, SMALLER FORMAT FOR URBAN SETTINGS, to be called Whole Foods Daily Shop. Ranging from 7K to 14K sq ft, roughly similar to an urban CVS or Walgreens (versus the 40K sq ft average for a traditional Whole Foods), it will feature fresh produce/perishables, prepared foods, prepacked meals, weekly essentials, alcohol and a cafe - but no full-service meat counters or lunch buffets. Meant to cater to harried urbanites, it will be sited in locations convenient to early-morning or after-work commutes. Initially it will not offer pickup or delivery, though that may change. For those who dream of the “15-minute city”, this sounds like really exciting news, and for Whole Foods, it makes sense as a way of capturing incremental demand in submarkets between larger stores. Understand, however, that Daily Shop will first appear in New York City, with “plans to explore wider U.S. expansion”, presumably starting with other tightly-tightly-packed neighborhoods in larger metros like Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Francisco - in other words, settings that already have these kinds of upmarket conveniences and amenities. There’s Westside Market, Garden of Eden and Union Market in New York City; Di Bruno Bros. and GIANT Heirloom Market in Philadelphia; Foxtrot Market in Chicago and Washington, D.C; Bi-Rite Market and Luke’s Local in San Francisco – frankly, in most of these cities, Whole Foods is a bit late to the game at this point. More importantly, Amazon’s efforts thus far with in-store grocery have been somewhat underwhelming. Their flat and uninspired Amazon Go concept, also designed for this purpose, leaves me cold – and evidently, I’m not the only one, with eight of its 28 units shuttered last year. Don’t get me wrong – Amazon is brilliant in so many ways, and I really want this new banner to succeed, as it would give us retail consultants another option in a critical category for our urban clients. But I’m not counting my chickens yet. #retailcontrarian #retail #retailleasing #retailrealestate #retailproperty #retailtrends #retaildevelopment #retailmarket #retailbroker #retailspace #retailindustry #retailers #downtown #mainstreet #mainstreets #citycenter #citycentre #highstreet #urbanretail #icsc #commercialrealestate #ida #iedc #uli #icma #planning #marketanalysis #siteselection #futureofretail #urbandevelopment #jll #citymanager #cnu #businessimprovementdistrict #bid #bia #retailbrew #storefront #downtownrevitalization #nyt #wsj #urbanregeneration #planetizen #economicdevelopment #storefronts #atcm #ecommerce #shopping #wholefoods #wholefoodsmarket #amazon #amazonfresh #wholefoodsdailyshop #grocery #grocerystore #grocerystores #supermarket #supermarkets #foodmarket #foodmarkets #urbanconveniencestore #15minutecity #walkableneighborhoods #walkable #progressivegrocer #supermarketnews #liveworkplay #mixeduse #mixedusedevelopment #mixeduseneighborhood #foxtrot #grocer

**Definition:** "Single grocery stores" refers to individual, standalone grocery stores that operate independently, rather than being part of a larger chain or supermarket group. These stores are typically owned and managed by local individuals or businesses and may offer a more personalized shopping experience compared to larger chain stores. **Example Sentences:** 1. "I prefer shopping at single grocery stores because they often carry unique local products." 2. "Single grocery stores usually provide a more personalized customer service experience than big chains." 3. "The single grocery store on Main Street has a great selection of organic produce." 4. "Single grocery stores in the area are struggling to compete with large supermarket chains." 5. "Many single grocery stores have loyal customers who appreciate their community focus." 6. "I found some amazing artisan cheeses at a single grocery store I visited last week." 7. "Single grocery stores often support local farmers and businesses." 8. "The single grocery store near my house always has the freshest bread." 9. "Single grocery stores may not have the same low prices as big chains, but they offer unique items." 10. "I like to shop at single grocery stores to help support small businesses in my neighborhood." **Hashtags:** #SingleGroceryStores #LocalShopping #IndependentGrocers #SupportLocalBusinesses #PersonalizedService #OrganicProduce #ArtisanFoods #NeighborhoodStores #SmallBusinessSupport #CommunityShopping

This makes sense to me -- a #smallstore concept aimed at urban dwellers (read: peeps who have money spend and what to drop it on fresh-squeezed juices, etc.) starting in NYC. First, sounds like they (#wholefoodsmarket) have a focus on their target customers; second, this allows them to penetrate markets where retail space is VERY expensive; third, as they have store base to start, they can leverage existing supply chains to be efficient (looking at you #foxtrot). But, it's not really a #grocerystore or should I say a traditional grocery store. It's what grocery seems to be almost inevitably evolving toward -- smaller footprint, highly specialized, highly efficient outlets that work for a (or many) specific markets. Does this work in Williamsburg, IA? Or even San Angelo, TX? Or the 'burbs of Chicago? Probably not. I hope that #WFM doesn't forget that lesson as they roll these out.

Hey NYC - look for 5 new Whole Foods Market "Daily Shop" stores coming to you across the city. "The goal is to bring the stores to "dense, metropolitan areas" and make it easier for shoppers to find "grab-and-go meals and snacks, weekly essentials, and a quick, easy destination to pick up ingredients to complete a meal," Whole Foods said in a press release. The company will explore opening Daily Shop stores in other US cities." As industry veterans are aware, this isn't Amazon's first time operating small format supermarkets. Is it a coincidence that Daily Shop and Amazon Fresh stores, are roughly the same size and frequently stock Whole Foods's own-brand products? I think not. While the focus for Daily Shop locations seems to be dense metropolitan areas, only the future will tell of its success and whether it will broaden to suburban markets particularly those with unoccupied Amazon Fresh boxes. #cre #retailrealestate #groceryretail #commercialrealestate

Is this the future of supermarket planograms? 🛒 This morning I popped into the newly refurbished Marks and Spencer across the road from GRIDDLE | B Corp™ office and spotted this - a freezer prominently placed between the ambient bakery and the in-store bakery. As a (unsurprising) massive fan of the freezer, here's why I love this move from M&S: Moving frozen offerings to prime locations where shoppers browse more helps to reshape the perception of frozen food. It's not just about peas and emergency pizzas anymore; it's about healthy, sustainable, and convenient choices. By consolidating all bakery items in one spot, supermarkets are allowing consumers to consider all options equally during their purchase decision. Very excited to see this change and I hope that more supermarkets follow suit, across not just bakery but other categories too, enabling shoppers to focus on product benefits rather than store layout. Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments #SupermarketInnovation #FrozenFoodRevolution #FoodIndustryTrends

Publix Super Markets continues to grow and goes bigger and bolder with a new store prototype in some locations in the Southeast. The grocer just opened its third location under the new experience-focused design — a 55,701-square-foot store with an olive bar, outdoor seating, a Publix Pours area with wine, beer and kombucha on tap and other features to address customers' desire to enjoy more upscale features while also having a more traditional grocery shopping experience. Grocery Dive reports that the grocer has been investing more in its stores and its capital spending totaled $2.3 billion in 2023 — a nearly 28% increase over the nearly $1.8 billion it spent in 2022. Publix opened 33 supermarkets, including nine replacements, remodeled 79 locations and closed four during the nine months that ended September 30, 2023. They currently have 1,365 stores across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky. #groceryretail #grocery #gbtrealty #buildingvalue #growth https://lnkd.in/eEES_Tsa

New York Bottega shops, beware! Whole Foods Market is shaking up (again) the retail scene with the launch of their new "Daily Shop" format. This grocery store concept resembles the traditional neighborhood stores that populated American cities and towns before the advent of the first modern retail chain, Piggly Wiggly, in 1916. Whole Foods Market aims to offer a quick and convenient shopping experience while still providing the fresh and high-quality products that made the pioneer of natural grocery category, now owned by Amazon, a food destination in many American urban areas. The first location is set to open on the Upper East Side in #Manhattan, with more to follow in New York City before the format is introduced to other states. As the north American food retail industry continues to evolve, with Walmart entering the #ecommerce space and #AmazonFresh stores testing new palm readers and check-less technologies, it's exciting to see how the sector continues to innovate and evolve. #futureofretail #futureoffood

Several years after shuttering its 365 store concept, Whole Foods Market is taking another crack at small-format grocery stores. While 365 was positioned as a less-expensive Whole Foods, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop will feature a greatest hits lineup of WFM products, including grocery and grab-and-go, in urban stores that are about a quarter the size of its traditional stores. The first location will open in New York City's Upper East Side. As the name implies, Whole Foods Daily Shop will be more of a small-basket, high-frequency convenience shopping destination. Whole Foods knows how to operate in urban markets, and companies like Foxtrot are showing there's a lot of demand for small, upscale shops that draw from local neighborhoods. But will shoppers gravitate towards Whole Foods stores that don't have service departments and the large selection of local and specialty items its larger stores feature? Amazon is apparently pleased with Whole Foods' growth, and this launch shows the emphasis it continues to place on operating targeted brick-and-mortar grocery formats. Story by Peyton Bigora
