Thanks to Michael Kavate at Inside Philanthropy for covering the recent explosion of interest in the Agroecology Fund by major climate funders including Waverley Street Foundation Ballmer Group and others. "The Agroecology Fund is now on track to give out about as much money in the next several years as it did in the last dozen — a sign that philanthropic interest in this space has spiked as the climate crisis pushes more funders, and particularly billionaire donors, to put money toward food system transformation. These new backers are a boon for #agroecology, a term with many definitions that most broadly refers to agricultural approaches seeking sustainable coexistence of people and planet. Advocates and practitioners of agroecology — which has its roots in Indigenous food systems — have seen a funding swell over the last few years as donors look for equitable ways to decarbonize our food system, which by some measures accounts for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. The Agroecology Fund not only serves as a barometer of this new interest; it embodies many of the major trends in #climatephilanthropy: funders’ wide range of focus areas, billionaire donors’ preference for regrantors, burgeoning support for localized grantmaking, nonprofit interest in government funding, and uncertainty about the future of the current billionaire funding boom." https://lnkd.in/ggvfisst

Each of my amazing kids tends to 3 Hydro Coops, while Lize Marie leads the charge with an impressive 6 Coops. Together, they're making a profound impact on both our local community and the agricultural landscape. 🌾🚜 🐣🌿 In just six weeks, our family farm produces a staggering 2250 broiler chickens, securing a profit exceeding R140,000. But our mission goes beyond profits; it's about giving back. Every month, we're honored to donate over 6000 eggs and more than 5000 fresh vegetables to support local communities in need. 🥚🥕 Through Hydro Coops, we've not only found a sustainable source of income but also a platform for meaningful contribution. Our children are learning invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship, responsibility, and the joy of giving back. CANT HANDLE THE CUTENESS!!! 8 weeks to their solar salad As we consider the future of these cute pasture pigs who's parents were raised on solar let us also consider the future of solar installations let us consider how best to use the land we manage. As CS Lewis once mused,  "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending."  Agrivoltaics is an act of stewardship, you rewrite the narrative of solar, transforming agricultural land lost into more productive food producing land, Community disenfranchisement into farm partner relationships and meaningful engagement. As we witness the pasture livestock graze into the boundless sea of shady blue and green, the beautiful pastoral view is a silent testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and the ingenuity that will carry us into the future. we are reminded that every solar acre farmed is a victory worth celebrating. Pumpkins For Pigs (PFP)’s mission is to reduce food waste in our communities by diverting viable foodstuffs, including pumpkins, to farms, animal sanctuaries, and rescues for feed or compost. Pumpkins For Pigs fills the gap between human-consumable food and compost by redirecting viable foodstuffs to animals. We built a growing network of donation sites – farms, animal sanctuaries, and rescues – that accept a variety of food they can feed to their animals. In addition to reducing food waste, the benefits are numerous: -- Providing substance, nutrition, and enrichment to animals. -- Reducing feed and enrichment costs for Donation Sites. -- Reducing the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills, which extends useful life of the landfill. -- Preventing methane and carbon dioxide production from food waste breaking down in landfills. -- Introducing small businesses to new customers. -- Building community networks.
