The Power of "Just Showing Up" - A Lesson Learned From My Entrepreneurial Journey Earlier this month, I had the privilege of being invited back speaking at the Massachusetts Network of the Association for Vascular Access (MAVAN). It was a full circle moment that felt like a homecoming. Flashback to 2014: Back then, as a student at Babson College participating in the Summer Venture Program, my mentor David Lopez, MBA, CBC, CLC suggested something simple yet powerful – "just show up" to the upcoming MAVAN event. Little did I know, that day would be career-changing. Lois Davis, the President of MAVAN, encouraged me to stand up in front of the audience and share my story as a patient entrepreneur. Not only did I receive invaluable product feedback to refine Mighty Well's PICCPerfect (a medical device), but it unexpectedly kickstarted my public speaking career and involvement in the AVA community. Fast forward to today: So many aspiring entrepreneurs I mentor ask me the same question – "How do I take that first step?"  My answer is always the same: The biggest first leap you can take is simply "just showing up." Don't wait until everything feels perfect. Don't let fear paralyze you. Sometimes, the most unexpected opportunities arise from stepping outside your comfort zone and putting yourself out there. **Know your worth and find those who recognise it.** There’s a story that’s been told with a watch, and now a car, but it’s worth sharing again. A father gifted his daughter an old car and asked her to sell it. She received vastly different offers: £1,000 from a pawn shop, $100,000 from a car dealer but £1,000,000 from a passionate car club. The car’s value didn’t change — it was the people she presented it to that made all the difference. **The lesson:** Your value doesn’t decrease just because someone else doesn’t recognise it. You need to be in the right place with the right people who truly see and understand your worth. This resonates deeply with me for both personal and professional life. Whether you’re an entrepreneur like me, a professional in a corporate or institutional setting, or a leader navigating life’s challenges, the **right environment is key**. Surround yourself with people who see your true potential and nurture growth. Those who don’t see the full value of your assets or your mission, best to distance yourself from them. For me, after establishing Aston Medical School for the community, it’s about developing MirZyme Therapeutics for solving a global health problem with our innovative, clinically proven digital diagnostic M-PREG, and targeted oral therapeutic MZe786 for preventing preeclampsia. These groundbreaking solutions have even gained an ILAP Innovation Passport from the MHRA and we are getting closer to going into clinical stage. After several weeks of late nights and long weekends, I’m excited to share my recent paper for my Entrepreneurial Mindset & Differentiation course on the intersection of Entrepreneurship and Biotechnology. I chose this topic because I knew it would challenge me. My paper explores the ideas of effectuation and bricolage, entrepreneurial orientation, and the differences between resource and knowledge based views.
