𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 #𝗪𝗠𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 #𝗦𝗗𝗩𝘀? The recent collapse of #WMMotor, where their vehicles lost essential features due to software failures, has raised some serious concerns about the reliability of Software-Defined Vehicles (#SDVs). Many are discussing this is a #SDV failure, but I think there's more to consider, especially when we look at how open source collaboration might offer solutions. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴? WM Motor’s situation shows how risky it is to rely on proprietary software tied to a company’s cloud services. When WM Motor went bankrupt, many of their vehicles lost basic functionalities like air conditioning, car locks, and status displays because the software could no longer connect to the company's servers. This problem highlights a major flaw in #SDVs , when the company behind the software fails, so do the vehicles. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽? Open source collaboration could have potentially prevented or lessened the impact of such a failure. Faster Problem Solving: A global community of developers could quickly identify and fix bugs, ensuring that vehicles stay operational even if the original company can’t support them. Transparency: Open-source software is available for anyone to inspect, which can build trust and lead to more secure and reliable systems. Less Dependence:If #WMMotor had used open-source software, other developers or companies could have taken over the maintenance of the vehicles' essential functions. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀... Open source isn’t a perfect solution. Integrating it with complex vehicle systems can be tough, and ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards can be even tougher. Plus, without a company backing the software, who do customers turn to when something goes wrong? 𝗔 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: Automakers could use open-source software as the base, while still keeping control over critical parts with proprietary solutions. This way, they benefit from the innovation and flexibility of open-source while ensuring the necessary support and reliability. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸?
