I am deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. This tragedy underscores the urgent need to address climate change, which has been linked to the increasing intensity of such storms. Research from Climate Central, Inc. indicates that Cyclone Chido intensified over ocean waters that were, on average, 1.1°C warmer due to human-caused climate change, making such temperatures up to 92 times more likely. Similarly, the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment's analysis suggests that climate change elevated Chido's intensity from a Category 3 to a Category 4 storm, increasing the likelihood of such events by approximately 40% compared to pre-industrial times. It is a stark reminder of the collective action required to protect our planet and communities from the escalating threats posed by climate change. #climatechange #climaterisk https://lnkd.in/dU72Tkfy https://lnkd.in/dWsYCrNt https://lnkd.in/ddA-Shii

According to a recent study from World Weather Attribution, climate change has intensified the recent barrage of typhoons in the Philippines, making such events nearly twice as likely. Six typhoons struck the country in just over a month, affecting millions of people. The World Weather Attribution study found that the likelihood of at least three Category 3–5 typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased 25 per cent due to climate change. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC will continue to scale up effective climate action and work with communities on early warning and anticipatory action to be better prepared in the face of such extreme weather events. http://bit.ly/3DgNoRt

The World Weather Attribution (WWA) group said one recent four-day period was the rainiest ever recorded in central Europe - an intensity made twice as likely by climate change. Europe is the fastest-warming continent. The last five years were on average around 2.3C warmer than the second half of the 19th Century, according to the Copernicus climate service. This not only brings much more frequent and intense heatwaves, but also more extreme rainfall, particularly over north and central Europe. The picture is more complicated in southern Europe, due to shifts in large-scale weather patterns.

Desert climate. "Spain is slipping into a desert climate, according to a new study into the relationship between global heating and drought. The Mediterranean country is clearly on the frontlines of climate change in Europe. Now researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona have delved deeper into its climate vitals. By 2050, they predict that rainfall will decrease by up to 20 per cent compared to current levels. This would tip Spain* from a temperate Mediterranean climate into a steppe- or even desert-like one, as per the Köppen system which divides the world into five different climate zones based on plant growth. “The warming process resulting from climate change has been very pronounced in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, representing a true hotspot,” the researchers write." * https://lnkd.in/eESTNhcW Read more https://lnkd.in/e7773nEg #future #europe #spain #climatechange #sustainability #water #drought

We can solve the planetary crisis and stabilize climate by supporting nature, by reducing material and energy consumption, reduce meat and dairy consumption and by active restoration and rewilding of nature. The floods in Europe did not surprise me. The unpreparedness of the world did not surprise me. The unwillingness to solve the planetary crisis does not surprise me. The headlines must focus on the solutions to increase awareness and hope. We cannot and must not give up. https://lnkd.in/d_VReTKD
