🤚 As EU institutions negotiate the fate of the EU deforestation regulations, proposed amendments from the European Parliament that would sacrifice huge forest areas must be rejected, says Rainforest Foundation Norway. "The conservative and right-wing majority is prepared to sacrifice the world’s forests and climate to please the European forestry industry. If these attempts to sabotage the EUDR are not stopped, the anti-climate and anti-nature majority will threaten the entire European Green Deal, in addition to sacrificing thousands of square kilometers of forest", says Anders Haug Larsen, director of international advocacy at Rainforest Foundation Norway. Yesterday, the European Parliament decided by a narrow majority to postpone the implementation of the #EU Deforestation Regulation by one year and introduce amendments proposed by the European People's Party that would effectively allow huge amounts of products linked to #deforestation to continue to be sold in the EU. The decision was made despite strong support for the #EUDR by citizens, investors and businesses. The outcome of yesterday’s vote could have disastrous consequences for the #rainforest and the global #climate. Postponing the EUDR contributes to uncertainty and unpredictability for business actors covered by it. It penalizes those who seriously prepare to fulfill their obligations and rewards illegal actors and others who have not prepared well. Rainforest Foundation Norway strongly urges the European Commission and the governments of the EU countries to reject the Parliament's proposal and prioritize forests, climate, and nature over the narrow interests of the European forestry industry.

#COP16Colombia How can the conservation sector support national planning for 30x30? Our Executive Director, Scott Edwards, says "Stakeholder engagement is KEY". Scott spoke on a panel in the #GEFPartnershipPavilion at the side event National Plans for Inclusive, Equitable, and Effective Advancement of KM-GBF Target 30x30. "Getting to 30x30 is going to affect a lot of people in many different ways, some more favorably than others, and the more they have input and engagement early on in the process, the greater amount of buy-in you'll have and success in your implementation" CSF believes that the most effective work is collaborative, and we prioritize building lasting, symbiotic partnerships with stakeholders from the government to local communities, who are then in a better position to implement our recommendations and strategies for a stronger nature-based economy. #OurProject We're advising the Bolivian government on their Nationally determined contributions (NDCs), specifically providing research and recommendations for a more sustainable forestry sector. Part of our work involves highlighting the powerful economic contributions that Bolivian forests make to the country's economy. Our recent study found that based on just 6 ecosystem services, each hectare of the #ChiquitanoDryForests adds a value of up to USD 3,000 to the Bolivian economy every year. In the past, people experiencing poverty have been asked to plant trees in their farms to mitigate #climatechange. They wondered how they can dedicate their arable land to forestry. Now ,what they weren't told is the incentive of earning #carboncredits due to the role of forests in carbon sinks #carbonsequestration . It is important to have access to information. #povertyalleviation is one of the #sdgs2030 and carbon trading would be one of the ways. This week i was privileged to attend a 3 day training on Carbon markets and REDD+[Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation +] by Conservation International in partnership with KEPSA. The training covered 9 modules. My observation is that there's alot of need to build capacity and create awareness to the beneficiaries of this carbon credit projects. Alot of information needs to be out there. I tasked myself to read through the Cancun Agreement. This training has equipped me better as an Environment Projects Expert. #carbonmarkets #climateaction #environmentalsustainability #environmentalmonitoring #environmentallaw #sustainability #esg #projects #unfccc

Environmental Alarm: YouthNet Urges Halt to Indiscriminate Tree Felling Along Sunamganj-Jamalganj Road YouthNet, a grassroots youth-led network advocating for climate justice, is deeply concerned about the imminent threat posed to the ecosystem by the proposed felling of 3,000 trees along the Sunamganj-Jamalganj road. This arbitrary decision, made under the pretext of the 'Social Forestry Rules,' not only disregards the intrinsic value of our natural resources but also undermines the delicate balance of our planet's ecosystem. Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet for Climate Justice, emphasizes, "Each tree marked in red ink represents a vital component of our ecosystem, and its loss signifies irreparable damage to our environment. This indiscriminate felling lacks justification and poses a grave threat to the sustainability of our planet." The road renovation initiative, while necessary, should not come at the cost of environmental degradation. YouthNet urges the authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that prioritize environmental preservation while meeting infrastructural needs. We call upon all stakeholders to join hands in protecting our trees and safeguarding the future of our planet. Photo Credit : Prothom Alo

🌍 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁. Halting deforestation is critical in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Protecting the world’s forests through robust legislation is more urgent than ever. The recent proposal by the European Commission to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by 12 months raises concerns about maintaining momentum in this crucial fight. FSC will continue to deliver solutions that support businesses in meeting their EUDR obligations and guide them through the implementation process as planned. We strongly support the creation of deforestation-free markets and continue to stress the urgency of swift and decisive action to safeguard forests worldwide. It's #WorldRainforestDay! 💡 #DidYouKnow? New, transformative EU forestry laws are set to revolutionise the sourcing of everyday products like timber, coffee, beef, chocolate and rubber, changing our relationship with forests globally and protecting them from deforestation and degradation. The loss of earth’s precious forests is alarming, but the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) offers a bright ray of hope. In our latest blog, Justine Guiny, Senior Policy Manager at TRAFFIC, explains the necessary steps needed to implement these new laws before the deadline in December, and how TRAFFIC can help. From harvesters to consumers, we all have a role to play - wherever we are in the supply chain - find out more here: 👉 https://loom.ly/kF8ziNs #DYK #EU #EUDR #RainforestDay #rainforests #biodiversity #conservation #sustainability #supplychains #palmoil #environment #environmentallaw
