The EU Deforestation Regulation #EUDR delayed by one year, but survives attacks. A major victory for forests!🥇 🔷 The #EU Council and Parliament reached an agreement on December 3, 2024, to delay the entry into an application for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year, until 30 December 2025. 🔷 The law requires that all traders and operators importing to, or exporting from, the EU would have to ensure that the product does not originate from an area deforested after 31 December 2020. 🔷 The regulation's core goal—to minimize the EU's contribution to global deforestation by ensuring only deforestation-free products are placed on or exported from the EU market—remains unchanged. - Despite the one-year delay, not allowing the weakening the EUDR law itself is a major victory for #forests, #biodiversity and #climate. We applaud the Council and the Commission for standing firm against attempts to undermine the very essence of this important law, says Tørris Jæger, Secretary-General of the Rainforest Foundation Norway. 🔷 In the trialogue negotiation, several amendments from the European Parliament majority, consisting of the European People's Party (EPP) and several right-wing groups, were rejected. These amendments would have seriously undermined the EUDR's contents and efficacy, and their rejection is a major win for the world's forests. Rainforest Foundation Norway will now focus fully on preparations for the application's entry into effect in a year, and in particular, convincing the EU that the large remaining contiguous rainforests in the world must be designated high-deforestation-risk areas.

GOOD NEWS: EU Rejects Attempts to Water Down Deforestation Law The EU's decision to reject attempts to weaken the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a significant victory for our forests and our planet. Recently, led by conservative members, the European Parliament voted to introduce loopholes to the EUDR. Thankfully, EU governments rejected these efforts. The regulation will now require companies to ensure their products—like soy, beef, palm oil, cocoa, and coffee—are deforestation-free. This is a major step toward cleaning up global supply chains and protecting vital ecosystems. However, there's a downside: the implementation of the EUDR has been delayed by one year, giving companies until the end of 2025 to comply. This delay is concerning because every moment counts in our fight against deforestation. We need to work effectively to prevent any further delays and push for full enforcement as soon as possible. When I was an MEP we were advocating for the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), the precursor to today's deforestation law. Back then, the European Parliament supported the EUTR, but EU governments were blocking it due to fears of administrative burden. I took it upon myself to lobby EU governments one by one, explaining how the regulation wouldn't overwhelm their systems and highlighting its importance in combating illegal logging. After much effort, we succeeded in passing the EUTR, setting the stage for the current EUDR. The EUDR builds on that foundation and has the potential to make a significant impact if implemented properly. But our work doesn't stop here. Countries worldwide that contribute to global deforestation through their demand for these products must follow the EU's lead and enact similar laws. Together, we can create a future where forests are preserved, not destroyed and people on the ground do not have to put their lives at risk to protect these commons. Let's celebrate this victory and remain vigilant to ensure swift and full implementation. The fight for our planet continues, and every action counts. #Deforestation #EUDeforestationRegulation #ForestsMatter #Biodiversity #SustainableSupplyChains #EnvironmentalJustice #GlobalAction #RegenerativeFuture #NatureProtection #TimberRegulation #ForestConservation #PolicyForChange #EarthRegeneration 📸: https://lnkd.in/dp4qyhgK

#Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet and they are home to more than 75% of the world’s plant and animal species. They help people thrive and survive by purifying water, improving the oxygen content in the air, and sequestering carbon dioxide. Fighting #deforestation is a must. We welcome yesterday's political agreement between the EU Council and European Parliament on the #EUDeforestation Regulation, and congratulate the EU for keeping the original ambition and substance of the text. Adopting the original #riskbased approach will ensure all businesses can play their role in protecting and restoring forests. Thank you Commissionner @Jessika Roswall and Teresa Ribera for the leadership. In addition to strong policies, community engagement and innovative technologies must play a role in protecting and restoring our forests. Effectively addressing deforestation requires shifting from a conservation approach to a restoration one. Together with RISE - Our World Heritage, we will share exceptional transformations made possible through community-led initiatives, such as in Nepal, and look at how innovative technologies like satellite monitoring can deliver measurable ecological, economic, and social benefits, advancing global reforestation. We at Schneider Electric stand ready to work with our partners to support the swift implementation of the rules and continue to go beyond to protect and restore natural forests. https://lnkd.in/gPDNi2pb Adina Braha-Honciuc (Ellis), Jelena Letljane, Nicolas Plain, PhD, Stéphanie Paquin-Jaloux, Adèle Naudy-Chambaud

Op ed from me on Euronews: https://lnkd.in/gQHEaikF If this effort at undermining the EU Deforestation Regulation succeeds, the impact on the EU’s international credibility will be disastrous: sending the rest of the world the unmistakable signal that the EU will take decisive action to end the destruction of forests abroad, but not at home.
Agriculture Ministers from seven EU Member States recently called for a delay in implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). “If this effort at undermining the EUDR succeeds, the impact on the EU’s international credibility will be disastrous: sending the rest of the world the unmistakable signal that the EU will take decisive action to end the destruction of forests abroad, but not at home,” writes our campaigner Julia Christian in Euronews Green. Read the article 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNDWGwh6 Fern and 40+ NGOs sent an open letter to EU Member States, calling them on to implement the Regulation on time and reject pushes to delay and water it down. Another very relevant read about important regulation that impacts all companies importing/producing/selling products on the EU market containing one of the seven commodities: Cattle, Cocoa, Oil Palm, Rubber, Coffee: Soy, Wood. This regulation has surprised many companies with its early implementation date and requires companies to implement a risk management process that proofs (based on geolocation of all plots of land) that the imported good did not cause any deforestation and forest degradation after 31 December 2020. My colleagues support the EC in developing the country benchmarks that will be used for this policy.

What is EUDR? • The European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) is an initiative by the European Union aimed at stopping products that cause deforestation from being sold in the EU. • Companies must ensure their products are not sourced from land that was deforested or degraded after December 31, 2020. • Products must comply with the legislation of the production country, including environmental laws and human rights. Why It’s Being Introduced? • The main cause of deforestation is the expanding agricultural land needed for products like soy, beef, palm oil, wood, rubber, cocoa, and coffee. • Since the EU imports many of these products, it has a responsibility to help reduce global deforestation. • The EUDR seeks to protect forests, preserve biodiversity, and combat climate change. #EUDR

The current negotiations on the EUDR really do not serve anyone any good. As speculation around this landmark law continue, the delay to its implementation can harm momentum that it has already generated. Check out my new blog post where I examine the potential risks that the delay causes to the broader efforts to clean up our supply chains, and why doubling down on effective partnerships with agricultural commodity producing countries is essential to meet our deforestation goals. #ClimateAction #Deforestation #EUDR https://lnkd.in/d3tjWWnj
🌳 The EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products #EUDR is a ground-breaking piece of legislation with the potential to revolutionise global agricultural practices, combat biodiversity loss, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ⌛ However, the recent attempts to weaken the regulation and the upcoming twelve-month delay to its application creates serious risks to its efficacy and could stall momentum it has already made in agricultural commodity producer countries. 🤝 The productive collaboration between the EU and the producer countries serves as the best chance to make meaningful progress in eliminating deforestation and conversion from our supply chains. 📣 The Nature Conservancy’s Senior Policy Advisor on Deforestation and Trade, Matthew Sielski, dives into what this delay means for the future of this legislation and outlines steps the EU can take to reaffirm its commitment to strong cooperation with key partners in the fight against deforestation. Time is running out! The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will soon be mandatory for most companies, starting from December 30th, 2024. This regulation applies to any entity that places relevant commodities or products on the EU market or exports them from it. As part of the Fedrigoni Group, we must demonstrate that our products are deforestation-free and not linked to forest degradation, especially in the case of products made from materials originated from wood, such as pulp and face paper. This law was enacted in response to the urgent environmental challenges caused by deforestation for agriculture and forest degradation, which contribute to climate change and biodiversity loss.
