Join us on May 29-30 in Penrith for NGAA’s 2024 National Congress, where we'll be exploring the theme: "Building Australia’s Newest Cities – A Model for the New Wave of Growth." Hosted by Penrith City Council. Amidst a housing crisis and ambitious national targets, the role of growth areas in shaping our urban landscape has never been more critical. Our congress will delve into Australia’s newest cities, focusing on place, productivity, innovation, and digital connectivity. We will explore the requirements of a new governance model needed for Australia’s new cities – looking at lessons from City Deals but daring to imagine systems that empower communities and local governments, engender collaboration and cooperation with industry and across tiers of government, and which produce well-functioning cities and suburbs into the next century. Interesting interactive infographic about walkable cities from The Economist. I was surprised to learn that Madrid veers closer to the middle of the chart than other capitals like London and Paris which are skewed towards public transport in the bottom right of the triangle. https://lnkd.in/d23VZRSm

College Station Explores Transformational Growth The City of College Station City Council recently awarded Hunden Partners, led by Rob(in) Hunden, a contract to study the feasibility of a convention center. This marks a pivotal moment for the city as it considers the financial and economic implications to expand its convention center, which could increase the capacity to attract and host large-scale events, enhancing College Station's position as a destination. The study will unfold in two phases. The first will focus on gathering critical data and insights through stakeholder engagement, market analysis, and historical trends. The second phase, contingent on council approval, will delve deeper into evaluating potential sites, financial strategies, and the projected economic and community impact of such a development. 💪 At the recent meeting in Stuttgart, the MECOG-CE team made an important step forward by forming study clusters. What will they focus on? Project partners are now divided into 5️⃣ study clusters according to their choice of the most desirable best practice based on regional stakeholders’ meetings in each metropolitan area. The project team also engaged in discussions about potential pilot actions to enhance metropolitan cooperation. The final study clusters will be focused on these tools: ✅ Food districts, lighthouse partner (supervisor): Città metropolitana di Torino ✅ Prototyping academies, lighthouse partner: GZM. Global industry experts at the Smart City Expo World Congress this week discuss the value of cross-sector collaboration & power of ecosystems in solving urban mobility challenges. Eva Oosters, the Deputy Mayor for Zero-Emission Mobility in the City of Utrecht, described how Utrecht’s mobility ecosystem isn’t confined within municipality boundaries but extends to the national level too. The city is part of the Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem which unites 15 cities in the Netherlands with 60 companies and institutions to find innovative smart city solutions. Going one step further, Utrecht is the president city of the international European organisation POLIS for the coming year. “There you can see how powerful it can be to work with all the different regions and cities around us on the continent to find solutions for the problems we all face.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eKHik7Ct

We have written much on Sweden’s three larger cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö – but there is of course much more to explore. The larger cities are built by the ocean, but Sweden also has 97,000 lakes – meaning that water is never far away. For example, the city of Växjö has two large lakes inside the city, and Stockholm has 30 official beaches and many more unofficial ones. Another coastal city is Kalmar, and it holds special meaning to Scandinavia. It gave its name to the 15th-century Kalmar Union, which united all of the Nordic countries for over 100 years. If academia is more your cup of tea, then a visit to one of Sweden’s two true university cities is well worth it – Lund and Uppsala. The University of Uppsala is the oldest university in Scandinavia (it started just two years before Copenhagen University with the expressed purpose of beating the Danes to it). Uppsala was also the main center for pagan Sweden, and today it’s the seat of the Church of Sweden – a nice example of historic continuity. Another must-see is Visby on Sweden’s largest island – Gotland. Here you'll find the Almedalen Week, 'the world’s largest political meeting place,' happening for a week each summer, with over 1000 organizations showing off.
