How can we increase access to assistive technology?🧑🦽🦻 More than 2.5 billion people globally need access to at least one type of assistive product like wheelchairs, eyeglasses, prosthetics or hearing aids but one billion people cannot access the assistive technology they need. On the sidelines of #UNGA79, in partnership with ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology, and the Unlock The Everyday campaign, we brought together stakeholders and partners who are collectively working to get assistive technology to those who need it most because, without increased investment and national policies to improve access to assistive technology, it will be impossible to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 📣 Hear from Pascal Bijleveld, Maryam Bukar - Hassan, Giles Duley MBE, Sara Minkara, Dr Oteri Eme Okolo, Christophe Tocco, and Anne Wafula Strike, on how you can increase awareness about this neglected issue; call on governments to prioritize policies that will improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people, including those with disabilities, chronic health conditions, physical impairments, and older people around the world. Here's some statistics regarding wheelchair provision! 🌏 80 million people are potentially in need of a wheelchair to assist with mobility (World Health Organization, 2023) 🏡65 million who need a wheelchair live in low and middle income countries (ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology, 2024) 👨🏾🦼➡️65-95% of people who need a wheelchair don’t have access to one (ATscale,2024) 👳🏼♀️ By 2050, the world’s population of people aged 60 years and older will double (WHO,2024) What can we do? With our upgraded Tovertafel system—now featuring 25 interactive games—residents are experiencing more movement, cognitive stimulation, and social connection than ever before. This advanced technology projects interactive light games onto tables and floors, offering residents opportunities to participate in activities such as word puzzles, soccer, bubble popping, and music-making.
