I've spent a lot of time in Boston this year. One thing really struck me: How bad the traffic is. But did you know it’s the 8th worst city in the world? Now, Boston is partnering with Google to change that. The city is betting on Google’s "Project Green Light" to make a difference. This AI-driven project tweaks traffic light timings to optimise flow. Early results? Traffic at some intersections dropped by over 50%. But here's the thing: this isn’t just about shaving minutes off your commute. It's about reducing emissions, improving road safety, and reimagining urban life. Think about it—how often do we consider the impact of something as simple as a traffic light? Google’s AI doesn’t just make streets less congested; it’s designed to cut down on emissions. It’s a smart, green solution that aligns with Boston’s broader sustainability goals. And let’s be honest, the city needs it. With some of the worst traffic and highest accident rates in the U.S., even minor adjustments could have major effects. Mayor Michelle Wu is all in, emphasising the need to make streets safer and more reliable. “Even small tweaks can go a long way,” she says. She's right—sometimes all it takes is a light staying green a little longer. That’s where AI steps in, offering precision and insight that humans simply can’t match. So, is this the future of urban mobility? Boston seems to think so. But it’s also a test case for how cities around the world might tackle similar challenges. As we continue to grapple with urbanisation and climate change, solutions like this could become the norm, not the exception. In the end, it’s more than just fixing traffic. It’s about creating cities that work better for everyone—cleaner, safer, and more efficient. Boston is leading the charge. The question is, will other cities follow? #SmartCities #Proptech

Announcing the release of our global cities study: From Future Vision to Urban Reality In mid-2022, ThoughtLab conducted a groundbreaking study of 200 cities across the globe, focusing on how urban areas planned to adapt to rapidly changing trends—many of which were accelerated by the pandemic. Our findings revealed that while cities had developed ambitious, future-ready plans to become more sustainable, resilient, inclusive, and digitally enabled, there were still questions about how they would execute these strategies. Fast forward to 2024: We've expanded our research to 250 cities to gain deeper insights into how urban leaders are now putting their plans into action.
