What’s suturing like? How do you resuscitate a baby? For 55 area high school students, hands-on activities and an opportunity to talk with healthcare professionals helped to answer their questions while exploring future careers on Thursday. Reid Health’s 2024 Healthcare Career Expo welcomed juniors and seniors from Richmond, Centerville, Hagerstown, and Seton high schools to talk to medical and support staff members from 15 departments. Students also toured the Laboratory, Radiology, Nursing, and Engineering/Powerplant areas. ▪️ Hands-on activities included: ▪️ Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR ▪️ IV/Port access with a bed manikin ▪️ Skeleton display with a view box with X-ray ▪️ Suturing for students to try different stiches ▪️ Meeting trained therapy dogs, Hanna and Nala ▪️ Tactile table with Moon Sand and Orbeez ▪️ A word puzzle ▪️ Barium swallow test to try liquids. The procedure is designed to determine whether food or liquid is entering a person's lungs. Indiana University East and Ivy Tech Community College Richmond were also available to answer questions on academic programs for health and industry professions. The event was hosted by Reid Health Human Resources.

2moThis is wonderful education and exposure to the skills that many don’t get an opportunity to view and learn from. I would conclude that seeing these activities removes some of mystery of how they are performed. This can change an individual’s perception from “I don’t think I can do that”, to “I believe I could do that!”
