Clean coal IGCC plants create more industry, jobs and communities This video discusses the merits of constructing and utilizing Integrated Gasification and Combined Cycle (IGCC) clean coal plants. They create synthesis gas that can be combusted and drive a turbine. These plants also have a secondary turbine driven by steam from waste heat. These IGCC plants can be polygeneration; meaning they can produce electricity, chemicals, vehicle fuels, gases and fertilizer at the same time. This has the capacity to create new industries and then in turn create new communities and bring in more jobs. Not only this, we could create a true circular economy by recycling the captured carbon dioxide from these plants, which in turn make more chemicals and vehicle fuels. https://lnkd.in/gXV6UXbV

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a process designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced from industrial processes or power generation and prevent them from entering the atmosphere. Congratulations to SaskPower on the record-setting performance of its Boundary Dam Unit 3 (BD3) CCS facility, which just had its strongest-ever months, capturing 88,999 tonnes of CO2 in May and 87,996 tonnes in June! The world's first commercial CCS project on a coal-fired plant - BD3 has now captured and safely stored more than six million tonnes of CO2 since it began operation in 2014. This is equivalent to taking more than one million cars off the road for a year - a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that would have otherwise entered the atmosphere. According to SaskPower's Q2 update (link below) BD3 also just completed its strongest 12-month period to date, capturing 882,273 tonnes of CO2 between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. This performance demonstrates the real-world application of CCS to provide substantial GHG reductions in the power generation and other industrial sectors. As a first-of-a-kind facility, BD3 continues to provide valuable experience and lessons that we are now actively applying to the next generation of CCS projects under development in Canada and around the world.
