SSE Renewables, the renewables business of SSE plc, to acquire 120MW/240MWh BESS project development rights from Low Carbon in Ireland The consented Thornsberry project would power over 115,000 homes and help stabilise the power grid given its flexible dispatch and balancing services, especially at peak-demand hours. Australian clean energy developer Someva Renewables and energy firm AGL have revealed plans to construct a 1.5GW renewable power plant in New South Wales, named the Pottinger Energy Park. The project, situated in the NSW South West Renewable Energy Zone, will feature 300MW of new solar capacity alongside 1.2GW of wind power. Developers aim to start construction in 2026, subject to government approvals. Noteworthy is the inclusion of a co-located storage system with a 500MW/2GWh capacity, emphasizing the growing importance of renewables-plus-storage projects. Energy supplier SSE Renewables is continuing to invest in the Midlands region with the acquisition of development rights to a 120MW BESS Battery Energy Storage System facility in Offaly from Low Carbon. The development located near Tullamore will have the capacity to power 115,000 homes for flexible dispatch at times of peak demand. When called upon, it would be capable of providing back-up energy to the equivalent of over 115,000 Irish homes for up to two hours at a time, while also delivering essential balancing services to Ireland’s energy system. The announcement comes as SSE Renewables have partnered with Bord na Móna to develop up to 800MW of renewable wind energy projects across the wider Midlands region. Today we're delighted to share news on a strategic partnership with Capital Energy, formed to deliver 1GW+ of Spanish hybridisation projects. Equitix and Capital Energy have solidified their strategic partnership with the acquisition of an additional 120 MW hybridisation project in Spain. The total portfolio now consists of over 300 MW of hybridized renewable energy across four sites in Spain which will save over 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year and supports the Spanish government in meeting its net zero goals for 2030. Following another successful completion, Equitix and Capital Energy will continue to leverage their strong partnership to deliver a further c. 1GW secured pipeline of hybridized renewable energy projects. The most recent project contains two high-quality onshore wind farms, both located in Aragon, which are currently under construction with an installed capacity of 100MW, as well as 20 MW of early-stage solar PV hybridisation developments. Both sites also have the potential for future battery storage optimisation. The solar PV and battery storage assets will be built on the same site as the existing wind farms to maximise grid capacity usage and take advantage of the complimentary energy generation profiles of the different renewable energy sources (e.g. wind and solar PV). The investment represents a second investment into Spanish hybridised renewable energy systems, and follows the previous announcement in June this year. ALMOST 40 PER CENT OF AUSTRALIA'S ELECTRICITY SUPPLIED BY RENEWABLES According to Kane Thornton, Chief Executive of the Clean Energy Council, 2023 marked another pivotal year for renewable energy in Australia. With record-breaking achievements in rooftop solar and unprecedented investments in utility-scale storage, the sector continues to drive towards a sustainable future. Renewables accounted for 39.4% of Australia's total energy generation in 2023, a significant increase from previous years, highlighting the sector's exponential growth. With 5.9 GW of renewable capacity added, including 3.1 GW from rooftop solar, the momentum towards cleaner energy sources is undeniable. Despite challenges like a slowdown in utility-scale generation investments, opportunities abound. The Draft 2024 Integrated System Plan emphasizes the urgent need for strategic initiatives to meet our renewable energy targets. As we move forward, the expansion of the Capacity Investment Scheme by the Australian Government presents a promising opportunity to reignite investment in renewables. Overcoming community opposition is a longstanding challenge for renewable energy projects. ENGIE has found a promising solution by offering financial incentives to residents and businesses near their developments. In a recent initiative near Hay, NSW, Engie will provide an annual electricity rebate of $1000 to those within 20 kilometres of its expansive The Plains renewables development, featuring up to 188 wind turbines and nearly 1 million solar panels. This scheme will be extended to all future renewable energy projects by Engie in Australia. Local farmer Richard Cannon supports the initiative, acknowledging that while the visual impact of wind farms is significant, the benefits can outweigh the disruptions. “You can put a huge footprint on a large amount of land with a few landholders,” he said, highlighting the potential for minimal agricultural disruption with proper negotiations. However, opposition remains strong in many areas, with community groups citing environmental and property value concerns. The Australian Financial Review noted that no wind farms in NSW had received planning approval for 28 months, jeopardising the 2030 climate goals. State governments have also introduced financial incentives, such as the NSW government’s $200,000 per kilometre payment to landowners for transmission projects. Engie’s Australian CEO, Rik De Buyserie, emphasised the importance of addressing community concerns early in the project lifecycle. He noted, “Everybody wants green power, but a lot of people don’t want it in their backyard... The sooner you start, really from the beginning of the project, the better it is.” Financial incentives like these can help bridge the gap between the need for sustainable energy and community acceptance. 📈Ireland ranked fifth 'most attractive for investment' Ireland is the fifth most attractive country to invest in renewable energy projects on a GDP-normalised basis according to the latest EY Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index. Ireland follows behind Denmark, Greece, Chile, and Australia in the normalised ranking of economies, according to the index. This is due to the country's as ambitious energy transition plans, proactive policy settings and significant opportunities continue to attract investment in the rapidly expanding renewable sector. During 2023, an additional 0.6GW of new grid-scale renewable energy was installed across Ireland, including 0.2GW of wind and 0.4GW of solar, represents a tripling of the 0.2GW that was connected in 2022. Capital Energy and VERBUND Green Power Iberia have solidified a strategic alliance to spearhead the development of pumped storage hydro plants in Spain. The partnership will assess the feasibility of constructing two plants in Spain, totaling approximately 830MW in capacity. According to the terms outlined in the agreement, Capital Energy will spearhead the promotion of these plants within the joint venture, while Verbund will take the lead in their construction, operation, and provision of essential technical support throughout the developmental stages. This marks the second deal inked by Verbund and Capital Energy in Spain aimed at advancing clean energy initiatives. In 2022, the two firms finalized a sale and purchase deal encompassing five wind and solar projects, collectively generating 171MW, situated across three autonomous communities: Andalusia, Asturias, and Extremadura.
