Today, let’s chat about something really important and exciting – the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These are a set of 17 big goals set up by the United Nations to make our world a better place by 2030. But why should you, as a young person, care about these? And what can you do to help? Let’s dive in! 🤔The SDGs are like a to-do list for our planet. They include things like ending poverty, fighting inequality, stopping climate change, and making sure everyone has good health care and education. These goals are big, but they’re also about the small changes we can all make every day. 🌱You might have heard people say, “Young people are the future.” Well, it’s true! The decisions young people make today will affect the world that they will live in as adults. That’s why their ideas, energy, and actions are super important in achieving these goals. Small Actions, Big Impact 💪You don’t have to be a superhero to make a difference. Simple things like recycling, saving water, standing up against bullying, or learning about different cultures can help achieve these goals. Every small action adds up to big changes! Your Voice Matters 📢 One of the best things you can do is to use your voice. This means talking about these goals with your friends, family, and teachers. You can also use social media to spread the word. The more people know about the SDGs, the more we can all work together to reach them. Learning and Sharing 📚Understanding the SDGs also means learning about the world around you. It’s about knowing what’s happening in other countries, not just your own. When you learn, you’re in a better position to share with others and come up with clever ideas to solve big problems. 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸’𝘀 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 March 15, 2024 – Global Youth Leadership Center (GYLC), an international nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth in climate-vulnerable countries, has joined forces with The World Bank's Global Partnership for Social Accountability (GPSA), a key player in civil society-led social change. This collaboration aims to foster youth leadership in climate-vulnerable countries in the Global South through online education focused on climate leadership, green skills, and social accountability. The pilot phase of the project is set to target youth in Ghana, Cameroon, Namibia, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Its primary objectives include expanding the knowledge of participating youth about climate science, building their leadership skills, and engaging them in climate action with a specific focus on climate finance. The partnership is especially relevant for both GPSA and GYLC, as GPSA aspires to play a leadership role in empowering civil society supporting youth to have a voice in climate decisions affecting their lives, while GYLC aims to educate Global South youth on holding their national governments accountable for the allocation of loss and damage funds. Aly Rahim, Program Manager for GPSA at the World Bank, emphasized the critical role of involving youth leaders in combating climate change. He said, "The Global South, facing severe climate challenges, is a wellspring of innovative ideas. However, young leaders often lack access to crucial information and opportunities for engagement. The Green Accountability Youth Initiative (GAYI) strives to empower these leaders, fostering a generation capable of actively contributing to the global climate agenda." Ejaj Ahmad 🏃🏽🥦🌎, Founder and CEO of GYLC, shared his vision for GAYI, stating, "The initiative will provide youth with knowledge of climate change, its impacts, and the significance of transparency, accountability, and participation in climate action. Our goal is to equip participants with leadership and advocacy skills to engage in decision-making processes, influence policies, and drive change at local, national, and international levels. We are looking forward to working with GPSA on this initiative." The collaboration between GYLC and the World Bank’s GPSA marks a significant step towards building a resilient and informed youth population capable of actively participating in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Together, they aspire to create a lasting impact on the global climate agenda by empowering the leaders of today and tomorrow.

UNECE 8TH FORUM ON PPPs and SDGs in Istanbul As PPPs get mainstreamed and contribute more to development, it is also imperative that they contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were developed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2012. The purpose was to create a set of global goals, related with the environmental, political and economic challenges that we face as humanity. The SDGs upscaled the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) developed earlier in 2000 for the period till 2015. Briefly, the 17 SDGs are: No poverty (SDG 1), Zero hunger (SDG 2), Good health and well-being (SDG 3), Quality education (SDG 4), Gender equality (SDG 5), Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), Reduced inequalities (SDG 10), Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), Climate action (SDG 13), Life below water (SDG 14), Life on land (SDG 15), Peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), and Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). For PPPs, SDGs  7,9 and 17 are particularly important. The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), based in Geneva, has a Public Private Partnership Section. To examine and debate the issues around PPPs and SDGs, to showcase the relevant standards, guidelines and tools and to build further on the already substantial volume of work/drafts of white papers done by a broad and qualified specialists team, UNECE organised a 3 day conference in Istanbul, Turkey from the 8th to the 10th of May. I attended the event in person and gathered new insights into the theme as well as a lot of associated issues – for example, smaller PPPs at municipal level are likely to be the foot soldiers in this mission - how can the inherent conflict between PPP procurement costs and “smaller” PPPs be resolved? I was also happy to meet, and interact with, a lot of global PPP professionals during this forum, renew contacts and discuss ideas and possibilities. It was a well organised event in gorgeous, pleasant and efficient Istanbul. Enjoyed both the professional and tourist aspects of the visit thoroughly. Note: The SDGs are separate and have a broader mandate than Climate Action. It is the UNFCCC which leads the action for negotiating the global response to climate change. Kyoto Protocol (1000-15) and Paris Accord (2015-30) are two milestones which seek Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in tangible terms towards these climate commitments.

🌱 A healed mindset—the first soil to nurture—is essential for reversing both mental and physical degradation.🌱 According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, land degradation is defined as the result of human-induced actions that exploit land, leading to a decline in its utility, biodiversity, soil fertility, and overall health. This is why we founded Sangha Estidama Hub, targeting the root cause of this issue—the disconnect between humanity and nature, which includes ourselves. To achieve a healthy world and land, we need healthy and well-balanced humans, as the state of the world reflects the state of its citizens, who are the creators and manifestors of this reality. To raise well-conscious, active green citizens and future leaders, we are deeply committed to collaborating with teachers, schools, and all the right entities to bring this vision to life in a scalable and sustainable manner. This includes rethinking and reimagining the role of education, its curriculum, and its structure by asking key questions: What type of leaders do we need? What mindset is essential to address 21st-century challenges? What skills does the job market require? What perspectives and visions does the future aim to cultivate? Addressing these questions reveals the need to invest in the mindset of our youth, going beyond mere scientific knowledge and data, which often leads to anxiety, inaction, and paralysis. A healed mindset—the first soil to nurture—is essential for reversing both mental and physical degradation. How we perceive, interact with, and respect the world begins with our mindset. At Sangha, our environmental awareness strategy focuses on fostering inner well-being and development, emphasizing an emotional, spiritual, and loving connection with nature. Love and respect are far more powerful and sustainable motivators than fear and anxiety. Together, with the support of educators, schools, and organizations, we aim to inspire the next generation of eco-conscious leaders who are equipped to face the challenges of our time with resilience, compassion, and innovation. KEY LEARNINGS FROM THE AFRICA SDGS MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME COMPILED BY GEORGE FENIAS CHADZA Since the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, global communities have made this global framework a local agenda. From community leaders  to World leaders,  there is need for Positive empowerment of global population solutions which are key to achieving the SDGs. The local leaders across community sectors are embracing the SDGs and leading innovative efforts to build sustainable and resilient societies. The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to achieve decent lives for all on a healthy planet by 2030. As things stand, most of them are likely to be missed. This is partly because most of the global strategies fail to address human population. There are ten catastrophic risks that are greatly affecting the implementation and achievement of the SDGs and these include: natural resource depletion, mass extinction and ecosystem collapse, unchecked human population growth, global heating, pollution, increasing food insecurity, nuclear weapons, pandemics, dangerous new technologies, and denial and misinformation. It should be noted that there is an interconnection among all the SDGs as well as an interconnection of all ten risks hence they must be solved together in a systematic way. There should be Cross-sectoral partnerships that recognise the challenges about the links between population and each of the risks and bearing in mind that social and environmental issues are key to a better future. The encountered Health risks like COVID-19 and other global disasters have in a way presented unprecedented challenges, reversing decades of development and causing a deep global recession. Never has there been a more critical time for strengthening partnerships and securing the next ten years of collaboration for sustainable development as compared to this global time. The international community and all stakeholders must foster recognition of the urgent need to end global risks as soon as is ethically possible, and promote greater investment in empowering solutions. Partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are becoming increasingly important in working toward the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing the issue of “Global security” for safe and resilient Communities. The NGOs possess the strengths, experience and knowledge for responding flexibly and quickly to the needs of local residents who are beyond the reach of services provided by governments and public institutions. Cooperation with NGOs is becoming indispensable for implementing effective SDGs projects, especially in such fields as education, healthcare, Climate Action and community development support, as well as peace-building. It high time that all Stakeholders should join hands and advocate for consolidated effort in promoting cooperation with NGOs in a variety of forms to enhance the achievement of the SDGs.
