This is a brutal job market, which is why I've been assisting my connections by reposting their Open to Work posts and by leaving a 'commenting for better reach' post. Is CFBR (commenting for better reach) spammy? No. An experiment conducted by LinkedIn over 5 years on the “People You May Know” tool revealed that weak contacts, people with whom you share only 10 mutual connections, is more productive for job hunting than strong contacts (source: “LinkedIn Ran Social Experiments on 20 Million Users Over Five Years” by Natasha Singer and published in the New York Times on September 24, 2022). Sharing your open to work post in my feed is an excellent way for you to get attention in your job search from your weak contacts. Leaving commenting for better reach on someone else's posts does the same thing. By commenting on posts, users can help increase the post's visibility, thanks to the platform's algorithm that prioritizes high engagement. This practice has gained importance as the tech sector experiences significant layoffs, with many turning to LinkedIn to find new opportunities. While some users prefer not to use "CFBR" due to its potential to seem insincere, others reserve it for layoff posts, emphasizing the community's effort to support each other during tough times. Kalley Huang highlights that some LinkedIn users comment "CFBR" to enhance the visibility of posts, particularly those related to job searches and layoffs.

New hirehire community meeting: Elena Marus on how to be an unconventional candidate and succeed. San Francisco, 2019. Andrey Doronichev introduces me to Elena Marus, and we're going for coffee at The Mill. Elena is a super-experienced Art Director who has just moved to the US 🇺🇸. Elena asks how to look for work in the local market, I awkwardly try to explain something and make an intro with Jasmine. Six months later. The job search isn't going well. With her experience in a political NGO, Elena looks like an odd candidate, and recruiters prefer not to engage. Finally, Elena figures something out, and in 3 weeks she collects 4 offers! In the most competitive market in the world! January 2022. Elena decides to change jobs, talks to two companies and gets two offers (2/2!). She starts working at Airtable. November 2023. Elena becomes open to new opportunities, likes the team at Snowflake, and gets an offer (1/1)! In the midst of layoffs. In a market where there's an abundance of strong candidates. How is this even possible? Elena believes that she has learned to exploit her "oddness" as a candidate quite well: "It seems to me that being extraordinary is easier. When you don't follow standards and step a little outside the box." I'm not going to put this company on blast... 👿 Rant 📣 : I'm going to take the high road. But let's be real. After 2 layoffs in 18 months (both times my position was eliminated), and looking for a job during the worst employment markets in my entire career, I'm tired. I know I'm not the only one. We're all tired of these companies, hiring managers, and recruiters playing their games. The days of, "make sure you have 3 months of savings" are long gone. I read a statistic recently, that the majority of the U.S. population wouldn't be able to handle a $500 emergency. $500?!! Five years ago I would have thought that to be ridiculous. Now, I consider that part of my everyday life. Bargaining with the Universe for every dollar I can put into my bank account. And then thanking the Universe for not attracting an emergency into my world. Working at restaurants and freelancing whenever possible, all while continuing to "network" and apply to job boards. It's exhausting. The emotional and mental toll these last few years have taken is absolutely unreal. To receive a generic, automated rejection email (especially the ones that come within one hour of applying - you know what I'm talking about), is bad enough. But this company couldn't even bother to include the title and location of the job I applied for?? They are a large corporation, but that doesn't give them a pass. If anything, they should do better. ALL of these companies and recruiters should do better! Job hunting can take a toll on our emotional and mental well-being. It's frustrating and maddening to see companies not prioritize the candidate experience. Let's hope for a future where respect and transparency are the norm in recruitment processes. Here are 3 easy ways to help job seekers on Linkedin. 1. If you see a layoff post. Hit support, repost, and comment. The more visibility the better. 2. If you know people in your network looking for work, introduce them via a LinkedIn message to people in your network who might be hiring. (make sure you get permission from both parties first) 3. If a recruiter reaches out to you about a position and you’re not a fit, try sending them a linkedin profile of someone who's out of work. It's the little things that can make all the difference. You never know when you'll be in the job market

Ah the paradox of LinkedIn; I need to be on here to see jobs and network, yet I hate being on here because 95% of the posts are horror stories about layoffs, ghosting, rejections and how really qualified people are about to be homeless because the market is so screwed up right now. Not great! To my fellow jobseekers, YOU ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, YOU'RE AMAZING! There is no magic sauce to landing a new gig, and there's a lot more luck involved than we want to admit. You have the skills, you have the experience, we just have to keep going until we get lucky. To the recruiters/TAs out there, I know your jobs are probably harder than ever because you're seeing firsthand all these amazing people who would be perfect for so many jobs get rejected because the market is flooded. Please help them. Help us. Recommend them for other open roles you have if they don't get what they applied for. Introduce them to other recruiters in your field if you think they can help out. Give candidates as much feedback as you can about why they didn't get an offer, even if it's just that they were unlucky. Everyone on both sides is working so hard to make contributions to their chosen industry, so let's see if we can't shift the tone of this site a bit with more good stories of people helping people and more folks finding their dream jobs.

It is highly likely that recruiting has been the hardest hit across all industries in these mass layoffs we are seeing. I cannot help but believe part of the reason the hiring system in many companies is so broken, is due to them not valuing recruiters. We don’t only source, recruit and procure talent, but we create empathetic, smooth running hiring systems. We know how to read and evaluate resumes effectively and quickly, we keep on our hiring managers to move interviews along quickly. Might it be part of the problem in this crazy market, that without the right resources being utilized in HR to hire and recruit, that everyone needs to jump silly hurdles and find ways around the system, just to be seen? Thank you Richard King you are an invaluable asset to the voice of the job search world.

Unemployment is a daunting reality to navigate. It feels as though I read about another set of layoffs. I am interested to hear from recruiters and talent specialists about successful career shifts. I used to work as a recruiter. Of all my co-workers, one stands out. Dozens of job seekers affected by layoffs contact her on LinkedIn every day. She does not delete the messages or ignore them. She forwards all the resumes to her network. And she does not get paid for that. It's just a sign of kindness while layoffs are rampant right now. This is the number that scares me the most for my unemployed, US-based, Recruiter friends: Active talent. LinkedIn defines Active talent as: “Candidates who may have shared a profile update, a public resume on LinkedIn or work at a company that may be experiencing layoffs.” It has been slowly ticking up…20K, 40K, and now 68K 😢 Not only have 140,000+ Recruiters tagged themselves as Open to work….more and more of them seem to be “Active”. So, I’ve made a difficult decision…I can’t help those that aren’t helping themselves. Recruiters who have shockingly dreadful resumes or lack any interest or intelligence about the power/importance of LinkedIn…you’re on your own. Sorry. I need to focus on Recruiters who are genuinely passionate about our craft and who are doing all the “right things”. I will focus on the Jeff Foreman’s of the world. The Elizabeth Whitener’s of the world. The Sherie R. Rohrer’s. The Jeff Shapiro’s. The Cathy Lim’s. The Jamie Davis’s. The Viviana Palacios’s. The Patricia Kuzmich’s.
