Microsoft and G42 have announced a major digital investment initiative in collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy. This comprehensive package, which involves an initial investment of $1 billion, aims to enhance Kenya and East Africa’s digital infrastructure, skills, and innovation capabilities. In doing so, Microsoft and G42 are improving equality in the accessibility of AI technology globally. The initiative will include: 🔹A state-of-the-art green data center campus in Olkaria, Kenya, powered by renewable geothermal energy, will be built by G42 and partners. This center will run Microsoft Azure and create an East Africa Cloud Region, operational within 24 months, providing scalable, secure, and high-speed cloud and AI services. 🔹AI models will be developed in Swahili and English, supporting Kenya's cultural and linguistic needs. Collaboration with local universities and institutions like the Microsoft Africa Research Institute and Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will drive advanced research. 🔹An Innovation Lab in Nairobi will support startups and businesses in developing and implementing cloud and AI services. Digital and AI skills programs will be offered, including training for government employees, cybersecurity training for 2,000 people annually, and business skills for young entrepreneurs. 🔹Expansion of internet connectivity through international and domestic fiber cable infrastructure. Microsoft aims to bring wireless internet access to 20 million people in Kenya and 50 million people across East Africa by 2025, leveraging partnerships with local networks. 🔹Establishment of a "trusted data zone" to ensure data protection and compliance with local laws. Microsoft and G42 have announced $1 billion comprehensive digital ecosystem initiative for Kenya. This is the Largest single private-sector digital investment in Kenya’s history & will support economic development across East Africa. The initiative will include four additional pillars that will be pursued with local partners: (1) Local-language AI model development and research; (2) East Africa Innovation Lab coupled with broad AI digital skills training; (3) International and local connectivity investments; and (4) Collaboration with the government of Kenya to support safe and secure cloud services across East Africa.
