Spend-based LCA tools can be good in a hurry, and are known and accepted by auditors. However, they are very approximate, and we have it on good authority that they tend to significantly exaggerate emissions compared to activity-based tools. Read more here.

"#Simplicity shouldn't sacrifice #accuracy" 🙅♂️ 🔍 The reliability of Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA) has faced scrutiny due to its perceived complexity and data demands. Relying solely on average or accessible data compromises accuracy, which is crucial for meaningful results, especially in corporate sustainability. While LCA can be complex, resorting to low-certainty data or generic profiles leads to unreliable outcomes. To navigate LCA effectively: ✅ Ensure expertise in process engineering and environmental sciences which are highly important in the phase of scale up of the inventory. 🛠 Utilize user-friendly and reboust LCA tools to streamline the process showing all detailes behind each process (energy input, emission input....) 📏 Familiarize with the Cut-off rule in your LCA standard (Don't cut off almost everything! (BIG NO)). And be aware of using proxies everywhere leading as well to a proxy results intstead of the real ones. Simplicity shouldn't sacrifice accuracy; companies seek solutions balancing ease of use with robust customization. #LCASOFTWARE #technology #innovation #Lifecycleassessment #sustainability #ACV #greenwashing #ecodesign

Life Cycle Assessment: From environmental interventions to environmental impact Excited to dive deeper into understanding the environmental impact of products from cradle to grave. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a powerful methodology used to assess the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service throughout its entire life cycle. Phases of LCA: 1. Goal and Scope Definition: This phase outlines the purpose of the LCA, what the assessment will cover, and the system boundaries 2. Life Cycle Inventory (LCI): Data collection phase that involves quantifying inputs and outputs 3. Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA): Converts the data from the LCI into potential environmental impacts 4. Interpretation: Results are analyzed to make informed decisions and improvements. LCA is a vital tool for driving the transition to a more sustainable future, helping to reduce negative environmental impacts and promote responsible consumption and production. Ready to take the next step in driving eco-friendly innovations!

LCA 101: The Basics of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) As I wrote yesterday, in the last few months, I’ve got an increasing number of questions on the topic of LCAs and their role in the world of sustainability. Today, I want to help share some of the basics: Lifecycle Focus: An LCA evaluates the environmental impacts of a product, service, or process across its ENTIRE lifecycle and the value chain. Stages Covered: It includes raw material extraction, production, transportation, usage, and disposal/reuse/recycling/circularity etc Data: Data is absolutely critical and includes a necessity for granular information on energy consumption and carbon production, water use amongst other environmental data. Cost & Carbon Reduction: An LCA provides deep insight into where costs and carbon exists in the product life stages. When used correctly, this data immediately helps to identify inefficiencies and opportunities to make products less costly, less carbon intense and more commercially attractive. LCA vs EPD: In short, an LCA can contain IP (supplier names, costs etc) that you don’t want your competition to know. An EPD can be thought of as a sanitised LCA which you can share with clients etc and that is also approved by an independent verifier who make sure you’re not just marking your own homework an A*. Tomorrow, I’ll be talking about where this has all come from, who is driving demand and where it comes into play across manufacturing and construction. If you’re also looking for a helping hand on your own LCA journey, send me a DM or pop 30 minutes in the diary via my Calendly link in my profile. What’s stopping you? #LCA #LifeCycleAssessment #Sustainability #EPD #EnvironmentalImpact #CircularEconomy #CarbonFootprint #SustainableBusiness #GreenBuilding #NetZero #SustainableDevelopment

#Sustainability #LifeCycleAssessment 🌍 Understanding Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for a Sustainable Future 🌱 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a systematic method for evaluating the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service throughout its entire life cycle—from raw material extraction through production, use, and disposal. It plays a vital role in identifying opportunities for improving environmental performance. Why is LCA Important for Sustainability? LCA is crucial for sustainability because it: ✅ Identifies Environmental Impacts: Offers a comprehensive view of how a product affects the environment at every stage. ✅ Informs Decision-Making: Empowers businesses to make informed choices that reduce negative impacts. ✅ Enhances Eco-Design: Encourages the design of products with lower environmental footprints. ✅ Supports Regulatory Compliance: Assists in meeting many regulations that require sustainable practices. The Four Main Phases of LCA: Goal and Scope Definition: Establishes the purpose and boundaries of the assessment, identifying the product system to study. Inventory Analysis (LCI): Gathers data on energy and raw material inputs along with environmental releases throughout the life cycle. Impact Assessment (LCIA): Evaluates potential environmental impacts based on the inventory data, translating it into effects on health, ecosystems, and resource depletion. Interpretation: Analyzes results to draw conclusions and make recommendations, including sensitivity analysis and identifying study limitations.

➡️ New article published on Haufe.de showcase 20 first-mover reports based on CSRD reporting 🌱 While these first mover reports are not blueprints, they can provide valuable insights into the practical implementation of the coming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and inspire other companies. Here’s what you need to know: 💡 Materiality assessment: On average, 7 of 10 #ESRS topics are classified as material. However, there are major differences, as some companies only deal with three topics, while others consider all ten topics to be material. All 20 companies consider ESRS E1 on climate change to be material. 💡 Impacts, Risks & Opportunities (#IROs): Only around half of the reports present the main IROs transparently. Lists, tables or graphs of the IROs can help readers to get an overview. 💡 Scope of reports: The average length of the 20 reports is 88 pages, but they range from 28 to 211 pages. 💡 Structure: The #PAT structure (Policies, Actions & Targets) helps readers to quickly identify where to find which information via the headings. 💡 Design: While some companies prefer plain, management-report-style reports, others have opted for a more appealing design. Images can add value but should be relevant and meaningful. The value chain and IROs lend themselves well to visual representation. With most companies identifying climate change as a material issue, it's important to be prepared with your climate-related reporting and data. Our experts at Cozero are here to guide you every step of the way. ➡ Are your preparations for CSRD in full swing? How do you find such first mover reports helpful? #Sustainability #FirstMover #CSRD #ESRS #CarbonAccounting
