You may have heard of companion planting 🌿 🍅 but have you heard of compatible occupation? 🌳 ⚡ Portuguese, DSO E-REDES’ 🇵🇹 plan to #IntegrateNature using compatible occupations: land-uses that deviate from traditional fuel management laws in Portugal, yet still effectively reduce fire risks while adding value for local communities. In 2022, E-REDES collaborated on a study to identify 107 plant species ideal for Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) due to their ability to: 🍎 Generate local socio-economic benefits, like fruit harvesting or wood sales. 🔥 Minimise flammability and combustibility risks. 🐝 Boost #biodiversity and deliver essential ecosystem services like soil formation and erosion prevention. ✒ Sign the official Queensland Parliament e-petition calling on the Queensland Government to save the #GreatArtesianBasin. The Queensland Government must reject the current proposal to inject industrial waste into this pristine natural asset that underpins #QueenslandAgriculture, regional communities and industries, and tourism to the tune of $13 billion annually. There is a strong consensus from the agriculture sector, environmental advocates, and local government representatives from across the state that carbon capture and storage in the Great Artesian Basin is not in the best interests of Queensland but rather stands to benefit the emissions targets of offshore companies. In the absence of Federal Government policy protecting the Great Artesian Basin the Queensland Government must institute regulations to prevent this proposal, and any future carbon capture and storage projects, from taking place in the Great Artesian Basin. Restoring Natural Salmon Migration in Northern Finland Groundbreaking news from the Northern Finland Regional State Administrative Agency (Avi)! After over 40 years, significant changes have been made to the fishery obligations of the hydroelectric power plants along the Kemijoki, Raudanjoki, and Iijoki rivers. These changes aim to restore the natural lifecycle of fish, especially salmon and sea trout. Salmon access to spawn was stopped 40 years ago by dams. Under the new regulations, power plant owners must design structures to help these fish bypass dams and reach their spawning grounds. This initiative also includes obligations for fish planting, which power companies must fund. This decision impacts key players like Kemijoki Oy and PVO-Vesivoima. Lapland's ELY Centre highlighted that modern knowledge and technology, which have significantly increased the potential for restoring fish populations, are key to this initiative. While the decision marks a step forward, it also presents substantial financial and planning challenges for the power companies. The decision emphasizes the importance of sustainable fish populations and the need for ongoing collaboration and research. This underlines the fact that everyone's contribution is vital in this journey. Although the appeal process might extend over several years, this move sets a critical precedent for environmental stewardship and biodiversity. Read more in the comments about the decision and its implications; info is available only in Finnish. #environment #biodiversity #fishery #finland

Have you read the recent white paper by World Economic Forum promoting a sustainable development pathway for the Cerrado in Brazil? The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Latin America and the most biodiverse savanna in the world. However, it has lost half its native vegetation to agriculture – and conversion is accelerating. The report highlights ways to align the production and protection agendas, in order to safeguard the natural capital of this critical biome while continuing to support economic development, including: 🌎 A production plan that involves sustainable intensification of agriculture on existing productive land – as well as regenerating degraded land. 🌎 A protection plan involves drastic reduction of further conversion of the Cerrado must, through a combination of law enforcement to prevent illegal conversion and financial incentives for landowners. 🔗 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e4wran4C

Denmark aims to cut agricultural emissions and restore nature by introducing first CO2 tax on agriculture and completely transforming the landscape of Denmark. This week a broad majority of parties from left and right in the Danish Parliament decided on a new plan for green transition – the green tripartite agreement – addressing nature, environment, oceans, climate and agriculture in one reform. The plan has the support of the farmers, the environmental organisations, the industry associations and local municipalities. The plan involves among other: 🌲 Establishing 250.000 hectares of new forrest. 🐷 Implementing a CO2e tax on agriculture – first country in the world ♻ Support a green and competitive transition of Danish agriculture 🌱 Establishing six new national parks. Find here the recently published review by Lorenz Schimetka, Jelle Behagel and others, on the monetary costs and benefits of forest restoration in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The authors argue that, while critical for policy formulation and for mobilizing private investments, economic costs and benefits of forest restoration are not well understood. Costs and benefits of restoration are still poorly quantified: evidence from a systematic literature review on the Brazilian Atlantic Forest). https://lnkd.in/earqbWgR

@ICE Wales Cymru Webinar Delivering net benefit for biodiversity and wider environmental benefits through Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales projects. 19 September 2024 18:30 - 19:30 Online Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is a regulator and a developer. As an organisation they are designing and building civil engineering projects that must deliver a net benefit for biodiversity. Whilst the Section 6 duty to maintain and enhance biodiversity and promote ecosystem resilience has been a requirement on NRW since the introduction of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016, recent changes to Planning Policy Wales (PPW) mean they, like all developers, must demonstrate a net benefit for biodiversity, within Green Infrastructure Statements when we submit planning applications. In this webinar we will look at the requirements of the recent PPW changes and some of the tools and techniques that we are developing to ensure we can deliver a net benefit for biodiversity and wider benefits through our projects. https://lnkd.in/eCbUi_eX

Queensland has obtained $2.75 million Australian Government funding under the National Soil Action Plan for new soil science projects! 👏 Led by the Australian Government, the National Soil Action Plan 2023 to 2028 seeks to prioritise soil health by enhancing knowledge, empowering land managers, and driving innovation in the sector. Delivery of the four awarded projects will help develop soil workforce capabilities, foster practices that protect soil, improve data collection and use, and incorporate contemporary and traditional soil science. The benefits of the projects will be ongoing, ultimately helping us with important scientific insights to inform policies and practises that: 👉 preserve soil health 👉 ensure food security 👉 maintain biodiversity 👉 safeguard our environment for future generations. Find out more about the action plan here: https://lnkd.in/g8kjhzCw #QueenslandEnvironment
