Situation: During the Future of Work course at UNSW, I joined the Solution Forge project, a collaborative effort supported by the UNSW Digital Grid Futures Institute. Our team’s mission was to develop a structured career transition plan to help Australian coal industry workers shift to roles in renewable energy. Task: My primary responsibility was analyzing data and mapping career transition paths, focusing on identifying skill overlaps between coal industry roles and those in renewable energy, specifically wind and solar energy. My role also involved creating practical support strategies for the transition. Action: I conducted in-depth research on the job requirements in both coal and renewable sectors and developed a multi-path transition table. This detailed the steps for coal workers to transition to new roles. By analyzing skill gaps, I helped the team propose solutions like financial support, internships, and psychological counseling to aid workers in adapting to the new industry. Result: Our project received positive feedback, providing the client with a clear, actionable strategy for career transitions that also supports the sustainable growth of regional economies. This experience significantly improved my skills in project management and career pathway design, better equipping me for future workplace challenges. Closing Note: I’m grateful to UNSW Digital Grid Futures Institute and the Future of Work course for this valuable opportunity!
