"All in all, Danish development cooperation is increasingly characterized by a fragmentation of priorities and interventions, covering an immense expanse of ground, and governed increasingly by both a recentralization and a growing set of projectized logics (...) This risks a continuous pursuit of isolated interventions as opposed to providing strategic stringency and direction for a deeper and more lasting impact." DIIS - Danish Institute for International Studies's Adam Moe Fejerskov has contributed an analysis of Danish development policy to our European Development Policy Outlook series https://lnkd.in/e2FquziU

Happy #EuropeDay! Today, 9th of May, we celebrate Europe Day – an occasion to honor cooperation as a central element of building the European common space. 👉 As part of the #Interreg community and #EU cohesion policy, the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine programme and #BRCTSuceava as Joint Secretariat, continue to promote cross-border cooperation and sustainable development. And yet, what is the European Territorial #Cooperation? ▶ Cooperation between countries is called #crossborder cooperation, #transnational cooperation or #interregional cooperation and is supported by instruments created and financed by the European Union, called cooperation programmes. ▶ Cooperation can be between European Union member states, at #internal borders, such as: Romania-Bulgaria, Romania-Hungary, Spain-Portugal, Croatia-Italy etc., or with neighboring countries at #external borders of the EU, as is the case of cross-border cooperation between Romania-Ukraine, Romania-Republic of Moldova, Romania-Serbia, Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine, Poland-Ukraine, etc. ▶These types of European cooperation are called Interreg, Interreg IPA or Interreg NEXT, associated with the technical title of the programme, and make all those involved in cross-border cooperation part of the large #Interregfamily. #MadewithInterreg

From Borders to Bridges: ECOWAS Leads the Way at the 2024 Abidjan Border Forum The 2024 Abidjan Border Forum has gathered leaders, partners, and experts over the past three days to shape a vision for regional cooperation, sustainable border governance, and climate resilience across West Africa. This forum showcases how borders can evolve from barriers into bridges that foster peace, security, and development. Highlights from the Forum Day 1: The forum began with a powerful opening by H.E. Massandjé Toure-Litse, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture. Her words resonated with all: “Borders should not divide us; they should unite us.” She announced 60 million francs CFA to support climate-responsive solutions and sustainable border governance, demonstrating ECOWAS’s commitment to building prosperity and security through cooperation. Day 2: Today’s panels explored critical themes: • Climate Finance and Environmental Sustainability: Solutions to protect ecosystems in fragile border regions through effective financial mechanisms. • Integrated and Sustainable Border Management: Collaborative approaches to managing shared natural resources, with discussions on sovereignty and environmental standards. • Transboundary Water Governance: Experts discussed the Senegal River Basin, Lake Chad, and the Okavango Basin, emphasizing the need for harmonized frameworks and climate adaptation. These conversations reflected ECOWAS’s leadership in fostering peace, integration, and resilience across borders, with contributions from: • Amb. Bankole Adeoye, African Union, on environmental diplomacy. • H.E. Matthias Veltin, German Ambassador, sharing insights from Europe’s cross-border cooperation. Tomorrow’s Agenda: The forum will close with a summary of discussions and commitments, outlining actionable next steps to strengthen cross-border partnerships. The final session will emphasize the importance of regional coordination and cooperation to ensure sustainable development across Africa’s borders. In my role supporting the communications for this event, I’ve had the privilege of helping shape and amplify these vital discussions. This forum exemplifies ECOWAS’s strategic vision and leadership in advancing regional integration, peace, and sustainable prosperity across Africa. #ECOWAS #RegionalCooperation #ClimateResilience #SustainableDevelopment #WestAfrica #BorderGovernance #CrossBorderPartnerships #GreenBorders #PeaceandSecurity #EconomicIntegration #AfricanLeadership #AbidjanBorderForum

We had an intense and productive day of discussions yesterday at the VII Regional Conference on Trilateral Cooperation! More than 100 participants from over 15 countries joined us in person, with many more participating online. My key takeaways from the day: 🔔Local engagement is essential for achieving sustainable development outcomes. Trilateral cooperation promotes horizontal relationships, peer learning, and the sharing of knowledge and expertise. This approach fosters southern-led development and helps shift the narrative within the development cooperation community. 🔔Despite significant progress, there's still much untapped potential in this modality. On the other hand, the debate and engagement in Latin America and the Caribbean have advanced remarkably over the past decades. The region boasts numerous successful examples, capacity-building experiences, and innovative financing mechanisms, making it ready to share its expertise with the world. The second day is now underway! 2moOfficial corruption has been widespread in Africa. What can be done? Corruption causes can be categorized according to the status of corrupt officials, i.e., petty officials and top-level officials. Petty officials are influenced by problems arising from the emergence of new societies and by traditional social structures such as an extended family system encouraging parasitism. Major corruption results from abuse of powers and privileges of high office. Typically, minor corrupt officials are tried and prosecuted, while corrupt officials in high office remain untouchable. Likewise, preventive efforts such as attitude modification through public information campaigns, general education, and improvement of the professionals' circumstances affect petty corrupt officials, but do not curb major vice. Effective control of corruption is only possible through organizations independent of the government and through strict laws to enforce principles of good conduct at high government levels, including controls on foreign bank accounts. Freedom of the press is essential for exposure of corruption. https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/corruption-public-officials-africa-comparative-study-criminal-law
