Here's my blurb at the top of today's Sustainable Future newsletter. If you'd like it sent to your inbox each Friday, sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gE44H9rP I’m going to anoint Shane Jones as New Zealand’s Scott Morrison. Let me explain. In 2017, Morrison, who was then Australia’s treasurer and would go on to become prime minister, brought a chunk of coal to Parliament. “This is coal,” he exclaimed, using the prop to explain how Australia kept the lights on, and power prices low. (By 2022, renewables made up 32 percent of Australia's total electricity generation, a record.) This week, as opposition here intensified against the Government’s controversial Fast Track Approvals Bill, submissions for which close today, Resources Minister Jones embraced Morrison-esque rhetoric to explain why the Government’s making it easier for coal mines to get approved. “Coal should not be treated as a leper,” Jones told RNZ on Wednesday. “It is not a crime, and I don’t subscribe to this hysteria that we hear on a regular basis from the environmental movements.” We burn coal when the wind doesn’t blow, he said, and while the country was reducing its reliance, “you and I won’t be having this discussion if the power goes out”. It’s good Jones mentioned wind because some would say he’s in danger of being seen as full of wind. Opposition to the climate-heating effects of coal is based on warnings from most of the world’s climate scientists who say burning fossil fuels is a threat to humanity, and we need to urgently and drastically cut emissions. Does Jones have another source? Governments set priorities. Would they rather build more renewable energy generation, for example, or devote billions of dollars to new roads? Now, this coalition says it wants to double the country’s renewable energy capacity. Fine, but how much money is it willing to invest to achieve that? The justification for enabling more mining, and oil and gas exploration, is lifting the economy – Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s main objective. You only need to look at the United States, and its Inflation Reduction Act, to realise clean energy projects lift the economy, too, and create jobs. This week, an article in the journal Nature predicted the cost of climate change-related damage would reach $US38 trillion a year by 2050, and it would be cheaper, by orders of magnitude, to reduce emissions. It turns out rising temperatures and more frequent and intense weather extremes, are very bad for the economy. Yesterday, it was announced the country’s greenhouse gas emissions had dropped, for the third year in a row, to the lowest level since 1999. A major reason was burning less coal and gas for electricity. But gross emissions are still up 14 percent on 1990 levels, one of the worst records among developed countries. There’s much, much more to do. All of this leaves this Government’s embrace of fossil fuels looking questionable, to say the least.
