Finding the balance #iwillweek day 1 It’s an interesting theme when the world seems full of polarised and often divisive thinking. When Rights ‘compete’ and to be successful you are often told you must immerse, develop good habits, maximise your time and develop and then grow your personal brand. Young people are entering a world where all this advice on how to make ‘shortcuts’ to leadership positions, make sure you stand for something purposeful, and developing effective habits often sit uncomfortably with finding a balance, bridging divides, holding safe spaces for reflection and curiosity. I’ve opted out of some of the more exhausting behaviours of leadership recently and therefore my presence in some spaces particular online has been less. But I’ve made a decision to only add to the noise when there something additional or valuable to say; to bring a balanced view to those spaces and to model that #stillwerise when everyday we do our best even if we’re not always charging forward. One of my favourite ever #iwillambassador interactions came with a 10 year old at a recent residential. I asked her what her ‘youth social action project’ was, she said -‘some days I work on ways of helping everyone be included and their mental health supported im school settings. But most days I just make sure I smile at everyone’. Finding a balance is exactly that isn’t it - some days we lead the fight and other days we just model kindness and inclusivity. Giving on a wing and a prayer? Business Plans, Sales Plans, Local Development Plans, Strategic Housing Investment Plans, Long Term Plans, Outcome Delivery Plans, Equipment Plans... Everyone seems to have a plan; developed goals, determined strategies, identified actions, mitigated risks, tested assumptions and dedicated resources. Why then do we use the language of the 'wish lists' when it comes to leveraging social value for communities? If we are serious about making a sustained impact on our most vulnerable communities we need to stop asking them to make a wish and start helping them to make a plan. I've been involved in linking corporate goodwill to communities for 20 years and organised social value, through ESG, CSR, volunteering, donations, is more prevalent now than it's ever been. This has been driven by citizens expectations and legislation. When you rely on communities making a wish so many things need to align, such as timing, compatibility and logistics. You sometimes find you're trying to fit square pegs into round holes just to achieve an outcome. We need to get strategic about community benefit. Community wealth building needs to be led by local planning at a grass roots level and adopted in partnership with our anchor organisations. Hello and Welcome 😁 Greetings and welcome to my my first ever blog on my new business consultancy venture: The Community Navigator (big gulp and sighs - I am absolutely petrified, so please bear with me)! The cogs in my head have been turning for a little while setting up this venture, hopefully today I build the foundations of a new successful business 🤞 . For many of you I have worked closely with over the years - finally I’ve put my money where my mouth is - I hope you will want to find out more! What is ‘The Community Navigator’? 🗺 The Community Navigator is here to support community based, not for profit and purpose led organisations in maximising their impact. I want to use my vast expertise across the third sector to enable more organisations to orientate their vision, values and purpose making life better for the people they exist to support. Why is ‘The Community Navigator' Important? 🤔 You have to love what you do and I absolutely love working with people and have spent my whole career across a multiple community based roles - every role I have ever had has the word ‘community’ in it! From leading grassroots fundraising, improving volunteer development and retention pathways to devising cutting- edge community based strategies I have transformed organisations to have the greatest impact. But when I look across the sector, across a backdrop, where in the last year alone charities have seen an increase to service demand of (on average) 30% (NCVO, 2024), organisations are working harder to not only balance the books but support people who need help more than ever. For many organisations they are admirably focussing their attention on reacting to mountain 🏔 of demand that presents itself, but there is another way - ‘The Community Navigator’ is here to help. My dream 🌅 is to support organisations to understand the art of the possible, overcome the challenges and turn vision into reality. I want to coach others to be brave and push the boundaries of what is possible and embrace this challenge. Finally it is really important that I help organisations understand and implement the cultural conditions that will make this stick! Finally…. You may be thinking 💭 - ‘this is really niche’ but I truly believe in the power of collaboration with communities and I think back fondly to the pandemic when community action, coupled with the social value of volunteering was a potent mix 😍. I am ready to help organisations overcome the challenges and seize the opportunities. I am not afraid of stepping into the unknown, having difficult conversations and identifying often radical and unconventional solutions.
