Why Are We Overcomplicating Hiring?
Bangalore, often hailed as The Silicon Valley of India, has long been a hub for aspiring professionals seeking opportunities. However, the current job market in the city seems to paint a different picture. Many job seekers today find themselves grappling with daunting expectations from employers.
Increasingly, companies demand candidates from Tier 1 B-schools or those with over a decade of experience—even for roles that don’t necessarily require such credentials. While it’s understandable to set such criteria for leadership positions, these stringent requirements now seem to be filtering into entry- and mid-level roles as well.
The result? Job descriptions that intimidate even qualified candidates. Yet, people continue to apply with the hope of breaking through these barriers. This highlights another concern: the lack of conversation around streamlined hiring processes.
Why aren’t organizations focusing on hiring based on skills, potential, and relevant experience, rather than rigid benchmarks like degrees or years of service? Are we inadvertently alienating talented individuals who could bring immense value to the table?
It’s time we revisit how we hire. Let’s prioritize talent over titles, and experience over elitism.
