Launch of ReSAKSS 2023 ATOR – African Food Systems Transformation and the Post-Malabo Agenda! Despite the impressive progress since 2003, Africa in 2023 faces both persistent and new challenges. The post-Malabo agenda for CAADP implementation must further deepen the focus to respond to emerging issues and meet the needs of sustainable food systems transformation in a context of accelerating climate change and multifaceted stressors and shocks," said Dr. Ousmane Badiane, Executive Chairperson, AKADEMIYA2063. "It is our hope that the 2023 ATOR will contribute to the development of a robust post-Malabo agenda which will provide a framework for sustainable food systems transformation for years to come". ❗ The recently concluded #ItalianG7 (13-15 June) launched the G7 Apulia Food Systems Initiative (#AFSI) with the main objectives of tackling structural barriers to food security and nutrition, and promoting resilient, sustainable, and productive agriculture and food systems. The initiative aims to ensure that everyone can progressively realize the right to adequate food. Key points include: 🔻 Enhancing Sustainability and Productivity: The final Leaders’ Communiqué acknowledges the challenging goal of improving sustainability and productivity. It plans to achieve this through partnerships involving multiple stakeholders, which reaffirms the significant role of private companies. 🔻Climate-Food Systems Nexus: The final Leaders’ Communiqué recognizes the interconnection between climate and food systems, especially in low-income countries. Addressing these issues is a priority, aligning with the COP28 UAE Declaration on sustainable agriculture, resilient food systems, and climate action. 🔻Focus on Africa: There is a strong emphasis on Africa, with several African initiatives highlighted. This focus is in line with the recent launch of the Italian Piano Mattei, demonstrating Italy's commitment to addressing food security and nutrition challenges on the African continent.

This piece: "To address challenges like recent floods and soil degradation, focusing on improving soil health is key. Initiating soil testing and profiling can guide targeted interventions effectively." Sometimes, we must accept nature's course, as floods cannot be entirely controlled by soil improvements. Instead, forecasting heavy rains and implementing water management techniques can help prevent the damage caused by flooding. Techniques to combat land degradation, such as trenches and terracing, can also reduce the severity of floods. It is important to remember that floods, aside from those originating from lakes or oceans, primarily stem from high mountains, providing a clue to addressing many flooding issues.

Kenya's journey towards enhancing food systems is crucial for sustainable development. Today's piece in NationAfrica highlights the potential quick wins from investing in the agrifood sector. To address challenges like recent floods and soil degradation, focusing on improving soil health is key. Initiating soil testing and profiling can guide targeted interventions effectively. By establishing standards and frameworks for dry and wet soil testing mechanisms, and involving youth strategically, we can accelerate the transformation of the agrifood sector. Engaging in a public debate on this topic can lead to the generation of innovative policy directions aligned with national goals such as the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, Vision 2030, Africa Union Agenda 2063, and sustainable development goals. Let's work together to drive impactful changes in Kenya's food systems for a sustainable future. 🍲 Discover global food security and sustainability 🥗 👨🎓 Theodoros Varzakas, Slim SMAOUI from University of Peloponnese and University of Sfax-Tunisia 🥝 🥑 Achieving food/nutrition security for all in sustainable food systems (SFS) is closely linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SFS is linked to all SDGs through the traditional framework of social inclusion, economic development, environmental security, inclusive and sustainable food systems development. 🥙 In order to achieve a sustainable world, it is necessary to move towards SFS that guarantees food/nutrition security for all while operating within planetary boundaries to protect ecosystems and adapt to and mitigate climate change. 👉 Want to learn more? Our CEO Jacob Olonde attended the presentation on the transformation of food systems as an accelerator for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa on the sidelines of the Tenth session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, In the light of the discussion, the key messages agreed on by the Forum were that members of ECA should: (a) Improve their national institutions, enhance regional collaboration and broaden the scope of their ministries responsible for food to encompass entire food systems, with a view to ensuring a comprehensive approach to the transformation of food systems; (b) Improve collaboration between Governments, the private sector, civil society organizations and entities of the United Nations system for the successful implementation of national pathways for food systems and for their integration into existing planning frameworks; (c) Align national food system strategies with climate policies for sustainability, taking advantage of the convergence initiative of the United Nations Food Systems Coordination Hub as an important tool to support African countries in rendering their food systems more sustainable, equitable and resilient, with a view to their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives under the Paris Agreement.

Today, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with #GeraldHalter, the First Counsellor and Head of Corporation at the #EuropeanUnion Delegation in Sierra Leone. Our discussion centred around the vital contributions of the #EU to the Feed Salone Strategy, particularly focusing on the operationalization of Pillar Three (3) of the Government of Sierra Leone flagship program #FeedSalone Gerald shared insights on how the #EU is actively supporting Sierra Leone's efforts to enhance food systems, highlighting the collaborative initiatives that aim to create sustainable pathways for food security. We explored how Sierra Leone's experience can serve as a model for other nations striving to implement their own food systems pathways, especially through the Sustainable Agro-food Systems Intelligence #SASI and the broader UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) goals. It’s inspiring to see how international cooperation and local knowledge can work hand-in-hand to transform food systems and improve livelihoods. Together, we are paving the way for a more secure and sustainable future. #FeedSalone #FAO4Betters #EUSupport #FoodSystems #SASI #UNFSS #SustainablePartnership
