Walk Backwards 🚶♀️Believe it or not, walking backwards can be incredibly beneficial! It’s been shown to help with lower back pain and even boost memory. Practice Pilates 🤸♀️This low-impact exercise can improve strength, flexibility, and posture, and reduce lower back pain. Movement Snacks 🍎 Short, frequent bursts of activity throughout the day can add up. Track Your Progress 📈 Keeping a log can boost your motivation and help you stay consistent. As a #healthcareprofessional you likely advise your clients to exercise. You know exercise a key ingredient for their healing, preventing or reversing deconditioning, and improving #wholeperson health. Likely your clients are not moving because of #pain or #fatigue. They may not tell you but most often, these are the reason they are not motivated. It's not that they can't exercise, it's that we have a definition of exercise that takes them out of the healing zone. Typical exercise, even beginner workouts, for someone who has #chronicpain or is fatigued from #medication side effects, are too much too soon for them. When they know how to stay in their healing zone, using pain and fatigue as a guide, they can take your advice. Pain and fatigue are the body's way of saying "hey, I can't do what you are asking me to do, please change what you are doing". Exercising in the healing zone is not a linear progression like they might expect. I find this is often most challenging for people who were athletes in the past or people who have been on weight loss programs. They are used to "seeing" progress, measured externally. They lack #intrinsicmotivation skills needed to restore #ExerciseSelfEfficacy Pain and fatigue are internal guides that are quite reliable. Learning to trust them takes #mindfulness and lots and lots of #selfcompassion. Exercising in the healing zone starts with re-learning how to move well, guided by #movementscience, starting with the foundational movements that are often lost when one is deconditioned. Teaching them to stay in the healing zone starts with a conversation that redefines exercise as whole-person self-care - where they listen to their body and adjust to move in ways that reduce pain and increase energy.
