Take the University of South Africa (Unisa), for example. With a history of over 150 years, Unisa has continually adapted to meet the needs of both South Africa and the global education scene. In the University Impact Rankings for 2024, Times Higher Education (THE) has recognised Unisa’s contributions to global sustainable development. We had a productive meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education Mohamed Ayman Ashour where we welcomed a delegation from Times Higher Education Higher Education to discuss the performance and rankings of Egyptian universities. The Minister emphasized the strong, longstanding relationship between Egypt and the UK, particularly in the fields of higher education and scientific research & role of British Council Higher Education in Egypt. He highlighted the significant progress made by Egyptian universities in international rankings, with 46 universities included in the latest 2024 edition of THE Impact Rankings for Sustainable Development Goals, a notable increase from 28 universities in 2023. Additionally, 35 universities were listed in THE’s 2024 rankings for emerging universities, marking the inclusion of 7 new institutions. We also discussed ways to analyze the performance of Egyptian universities in global rankings, with the goal of making Egypt a hub for education in Africa and the Middle East. Tristan Horlick from THE reiterated their support for Egypt’s efforts to elevate its higher education system, expressing their commitment to providing the tools necessary for ongoing improvement and development. The Network of African Students in Japan (NASJA) has organized an insightful program for prospective students from Africa. The program will convene experts from JICA, MEXT, J-MENA, and various universities in Japan. These experts will engage in discussions and provide explanations of the opportunities available for African students interested in pursuing higher education in Japan. Interested participants are requested to register by scanning the QR code on the flyer.

The NOHA scholarship program has sent the 2024–26 grant selection feedback to the applicants who applied. I am glad that among those I helped through application process, draft SOP and application across different continents, 2 persons from Nigeria are placed on the reserved list. NOHA scholarship is a highly competitive scholarship, and for an applicant to be placed on the waiting list, the applicant must have submitted a good application and meet the selection criteria, but due to certain factors, for example, regional and/or gender advantage, the applicant were not placed in the top selection ranking. This alone has given me and the applicant a sense of fulfilment. Furthermore, I am still waiting for feedback from some of them. For those who have not been selected or placed on the reserved list, do not be discouraged; to fail is to try again, and to stop trying is to fail. Let's give it a try again this year #2024. We can spread our wings to explore other global opportunities against all odds. Stay strong, keep pushing, send resonance and energy to the contact space around you, and then you will one day hit the nail on the head. Always good to read a winning story from South Africa. The University has once again achieved notable recognition in global rankings, receiving The Most Improved Africa University Award in the latest 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings. This award is for universities that show the most considerable improvement amongst African institutions in their global ranking over the last five years. QS has consistently recognised UJ as one of the world's leading universities. These latest rankings results, released on Tuesday this week, are exciting indeed. UJ among the leading universities globally The QS World University Rankings, one of the world's most watched and highly anticipated annual university rankings, has also ranked UJ amongst the top universities globally. UJ is placed at position 312 globally out of 1,503 featured institutions. This means that UJ has retained its global standing amongst the top 350 universities globally and is ranked amongst the top four universities in Africa. The latest achievement comes three weeks after the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings named UJ the number 1 university on the African continent when considering institutions younger than 50 years. These rankings demonstrate the robustness of UJ's academic programmes and its research and innovation for societal impact.
