We've been working for nearly a decade alongside ten other National Science Challenges (NSCs) to transform the research landscape. Our collective aim is to strike a careful balance between knowledge generation and real-world applications, to address public good needs. As our programmes wrap up in June, the Science for Technological Innovation NSC invited all directors to get together and discuss the core principles that guided our efforts, and key learnings for conducting future research. The output of the discussion has just been published in a new report >> https://lnkd.in/g3WfKESZ In it, the directors lay out their proposal for a research, science, and innovation system that cuts across traditional boundaries, values skills beyond science excellence, and which puts Māori front and centre. #sciencecommunication #NZScience #AotearoaNZ #ResilienceChallenge #scienceresearch #technologicalinnovation

In our new paper, we highlight how collaborations between scientists and non-academic partners can drive high scientific impact research — offering yet another reason to embrace the role of an engaged academic! This positive impact depends on the joint definition of research objectives and priorities, as well as on opportunities for effective knowledge sharing and exchange. These characteristics are more prevalent in joint research collaborations compared to response-mode interactions, such as contract research and consultancy. However, engagement in response-mode interactions can play a vital role in laying the groundwork for more ambitious and challenging collaborations. This temporal dynamic presents an intriguing avenue for further exploration, particularly in understanding how initial interactions evolve into impactful partnerships over time. I’m grateful to have worked with such a fantastic team — many thanks to Oscar Llopis, Dima, and Pablo D'Este! Check out our open-access publication: https://lnkd.in/dMrYkv5v
💥 What if working with non-academic partners could unlock your next scientific breakthrough? Our new paper explores how scientists’ collaborations with non-academic actors can drive high-impact discoveries. Co-authored with an excellent team: Carolin Nast, Dima Yankova and Pablo D'Este! 4 key aspects of #transdisciplinary research are described by Dr. David Lam, Maria Freund, Dr. Josefa Kny, Oskar Marg, Melanie Mbah, Lena Theiler, Matthias Bergmann, Bettina Brohmann, Daniel Lang, Martina Schäfer in their revisited i2Insights contribution at https://lnkd.in/gGFJ5jgF. They are 1) context dependencies including a) who is involved b) social, cultural, political etc factors c) research setting; 2) innovative formats that structure transdisciplinary processes & are adapted to context eg Real World Labs; 3) societal effects ie #change in short- & long -term plus at local & larger scales eg learning & changes in practices; 4) scientific effects ie changes in structure of research problems, research practices, results & scientific institutions. #Integration of context, formats & outcomes is missing in transdisciplinary research. Ways forward include strengthening interconnections & synergies, developing quality criteria & building capacity. #i2Sresources ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research Theres Paulsen Dr. Katie Ross

Taiwan-German Collaboration in #Research; NSTC-DFG #Funding program The National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan (#NSTC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation are launching a call for proposals for outstanding joint research projects in all fields of science. The submission deadline will be 5 February 2025. This initiative aims to bring together relevant and competitive researchers from #Germany and #Taiwan to design and carry out collaborative #research projects. Funds to be used on the Taiwanese side must be requested from the NSTC; funds to be used on the German side must be requested from the DFG. Special attention is given to the integrated character of proposed projects, from the concept to the work plan. Funding is only available for projects that involve a convincing collaboration between the German and Taiwanese partners and for which the anticipated research benefit is clearly outlined. The collaborative projects selected will receive research funding for a period of up to three years. German applicants should note that if they are using the elan system for the first time, they need to set up an elan account by 23 January 2025 at the latest.
