Today I hosted two community recovery sessions as part of the Village Roadshow initiative with Narrabri Shire Council in Pilliga and Gwabegar. The sessions culminated in meaningful and constructive conversations. I'm encouraged by the feedback from some of our community members, expressing their appreciation. I recognise the frustration when seeking resolution on community concerns, often feeling lost in bureaucratic processes. Reflecting on today: 👉 Proper Process Takes Time: Effective communication and managing expectations are crucial. This is why being regularly available to discuss issues with our community is so important. 👉 Action Through Council Plans: Council plans and strategies are essential for driving action. If an issue isn’t in a plan, delivering a solution becomes significantly more challenging. Community feedback on this is vital! 👉 Community Engagement: Participation from the community is critical. Without it, our strategies and plans are just empty words on a council document. Today also provided an opportunity to look into skills knowledge, capacity building, and resilience training. Investing in these areas is key to preparedness for future challenges. The feedback shows the value of today's sessions for both Gwabegar and Pilliga. I look forward to running similar sessions later in the year.

Lots of stimulating conversation at last week’s Community Land Trust Network conference. Some key take-aways (hopefully accurate) • collaboration and partnership were top of the agenda for how to scale community ownership/stewardship (we’ve got lots of thoughts on this! https://lnkd.in/gxXiNe6p ) • Lots of lessons to learn from Kennet CLTs partnership with Bellway Homes, and Aster Homes are the largest RP partner to rural CLTs… • …but only 20% of local authority officers feel they have the support they need to work in a different way - Pooja Agrawal / PUBLIC PRACTICE • meanwhile Daniel Hill highlighted that 80% of homes built by the largest housebuilders are run by private management companies - a model that has been highly criticised by the Competition and Markets Authority • all of this raising questions for what community led management/stewardship models could look like (we’ve lots of thoughts on this too!) - one option being Public Commons Partnerships, nicely framed as “public sector access to finance with community led governance” (forgot the speaker, sorry). Looking forward to picking these ideas up at Housing 2024 this week!

BIG’s Housing Co-op Initiative took shape in 2023 as housing changemakers recognized the potential of deep collaboration to expand opportunities for community governance of housing and the creation of housing co-operatives. This peer learning initiative created space to share, ask questions, meet partners and advance shared goals around cooperatively managed housing. Keep an eye out as this work evolves in 2024.
