It helps people work together, share resources, and support each other. This makes recovery efforts more effective and resilient. Unlocking the Value of Social Capital in Disaster Resilience! Our partner communities in East Gippsland, Eurobodalla, Clarence Valley and Tenterfield, have all experienced cascading disasters since the 2019-20 bushfires. Each time a crisis unfolds and peoples’ lives are disrupted, the task of recovery is made more difficult. Communities have little time to recover from one disaster before being struck by another, perpetuating a cycle of hardship. Following a disaster, traditional funding opportunities are often slow to materialise, come with rigid restrictions, and have criteria that often do not align with community-led priorities. Fire to Flourish is exploring alternative models, aiming to reimagine disaster resilience funding. We’re both trialling innovative models for decision-making on funding allocation, and exploring how to address current gaps in access to rapid funding immediately following a disaster. What is anticipatory action, and why should ministers invest in it?  As we approach the 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), it's time to spotlight anticipatory action—a proactive approach to reducing the impacts of disasters before they strike. By investing in anticipatory action, we can save lives, protect livelihoods, and reduce the economic toll of disasters. In our recently published 2023 Impact Report, which tells the story of Fire to Flourish's first full year of activity in each of our four partner communities, we shared a case study of working with small, remote communities across East Gippsland. Each small community has its own recovery needs and a personalised approach has enabled the Fire to Flourish East Gippsland team to identify key local infrastructure and disaster preparation needs for urgent funding. Between June to October 2023, the team sat down with communities to hear about their priorities for continued recovery - such as a disaster relief hub, installing a community generator and providing more reliable power for fire fighting pumps.
