March shines a light on Social Work Month! Today, we're spotlighting Lisa Richards Ryan, LSW! Unit, title, years of experience? Office of Intake and Emergency Services District Manager 27 years What do you do at the Department? I am the District Manager of the Office of Intake and Emergency Services on St. Croix. As a Social Worker/District Manager, it is important to have many characteristic traits, such as honesty, empathy, effective communication skills, being non-biased, as well as being a good listener. Who does your unit help? Intake is a unit that functions under the guidelines of Title 5 of the Virgin Islands Code, mandating that this unit protects the children of our community from abuse as well as neglect. Why is it important? Social Workers are public servants who are dedicated to ensuring that the children of our community are safe in their environments. Why would other social workers want to come work at DHS? Working with the Department of Human Services has allowed me to be exposed to so many families that need assistance. This work has also allowed me to grow and develop the skills and experience necessary to become a better person, not only for myself but also for others.

This morning, I’ve been reflecting on a network meeting about our relationships and the important work of preventing elder abuse hosted by Relationships Australia (Qld). It’s eye-opening to realise how often we overlook those struggling, sometimes without recognising their challenges. How can we make effective bureaucratic decisions when many feel disconnected from hands-on caring and repair work? I believe there is a better way—because we can create a community where no one feels they have to wait in silence. As families and neighbourhoods evolve, we are discovering the many relationships that play vital roles in cultivating inclusive and vibrant communities. They have always been there; we just needed to see them. By shifting our mindset to centre on community and actively listening to understand, we can craft solutions that truly meet people's needs—rather than forcing them into boxes. Together, I believe we’ll find that prioritising the nourishment of our minds and souls, alongside our physical needs, is the meaningful change we seek.
