3D-Printed Concrete and the Future of Construction 3D-printed concrete has emerged as a promising solution for a number of construction issues. Its potential to reduce material waste and construction time is highly impactful—but it’s not without challenges. Currently, 3D-printed concrete often struggles with durability in structural applications, where the strength and cohesion of each printed layer are critical. Without reliable bonding and durability, the practical application of these printed structures remains limited. The University of Virginia (UVA) appears to have advanced what 3D-printed concrete can achieve by using graphene as a composite. Their latest development focuses on producing a concrete mix that combines enhanced durability with a lower carbon footprint, aiming to overcome some of the technology’s most pressing obstacles. By reducing material weaknesses and improving structural strength, UVA’s mix promises a 3D-printed concrete that can stand the test of time. UVA is not the first to have considered the potential value of graphene in concrete aggregations. Versarien® Technologies Ltd pioneered the use of graphene in concrete emphasizing high-strength applications where weight reduction is also a priority. Very excited to share that our new research on designing with reused construction elements is out! #Reuse of undamaged #reclaimed steel components in new #structuraldesign offers a means to reduce #construction-related waste and carbon emissions. In this work, we show a design case where #carbonsavings as high as 83%–90% are possible compared to conventionally designed trusses made from recycled steel. Designing with reused members significantly differs from conventional methods as the design must conform to a so-called stock constraint. This work presents an automated stock-constrained design algorithm for planar trusses that uses #GraphicStatics as the backbone of the algorithm. To address the need for flexibility in reuse design, the underlying engine has inherent stochasticity to enable the identification of multiple efficient design options.
