The integration of Indigenous principles in business is a strategic advantage that benefits Indigenous and commercial interests in highly competitive global markets. At the upcoming 8th Annual FNMPC Conference, entitled “Valuing Reconciliation in Global Markets”, global businesses will showcase how they’re achieving commercial success and sustainability by integrating Indigenous principles, values and perspectives into their operations. As a proud partner, the RIA looks forward to convening with industry, government, and Indigenous-owned corporation experts, to build meaningful Indigenous partnerships critical to the Canadian economy and moving the needle on reconciliation. 📢 IPSP members are committed to help societies engage in just, democratic and sustainable transitions! In July we will highlight a few contributions by IPSP members in intergovernmental realms. Marc Fleurbaey (IPSP Coordination Council Member and “Measuring What We Value” Working Group Coordinator contributed to the Y7 Declaration (Youth engagement group of the G7). The Y7 reminded the G7 leaders of the key challenges of social inequalities, unemployment and climate change. The proposals put forward by the Y7 and the associated experts call for greater inclusion of populations, reinforcing deliberative democracy, the right of individuals to choose the content they consume online and, finally, the strengthening of the funding for the 2030 Agenda. Such proposals are in line with at least three working groups led by IPSP, notably “Measuring what we value”, “Ecological Rule of Law” and “Information as a public good”. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan met with the President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel today on the sidelines of the Summit of the Future. The adoption of the Pact for the Future signals a renewed commitment to multilateralism and paves the way for a transformative approach to financing the Sustainable Development Goals. The EU is a valued development partner, and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) continues to serve as a platform for fostering constructive North-South dialogue. #OurCommonFuture

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 I am excited to announce that I will be speaking about the role of mediation at the roundtable titled 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨: 𝙇𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮, one of the sideline events organized on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly. I am deeply grateful to DLA Piper and Ehab Elsonbaty (PhD) for providing this precious opportunity to explore how institutions can strengthen the role of mediation in today’s complex global landscape. I will share insights on the importance of SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and its foundational role in supporting the achievement of all other Sustainable Development Goals. I will then focus on the need for a 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, which aims to make governments' progress toward SDG 16 both visible and measurable. You can learn more about this initiative here: https://lnkd.in/eFHSncr8. At a time when speaking of mediation may seem naive or idealistic, that’s precisely why we must persist. The growing complexities and challenges of global conflict demand an even greater commitment to peacebuilding and dialogue. Landlocked developing countries face unique development challenges, from high trade transportation costs to reliance on neighbors’ infrastructure. A new cooperation strategy implemented in four West African countries could serve as a model for other regions. My recent commentary was published as part of the SDG Action's just released #HLPF edition 2024: Keeping sight of the Goals. Read more at https://lnkd.in/eAB8bRFY.

Grateful to FEPS Europe Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung EU and UN BRUSSELS for the meeting they convened on 22 March in Brussels on "Navigating through the poly-crisis: Towards a global pact for a better future for people and planet". The discussion focused on the upcoming UN Summit of the Future (22-23 September 2024), as a vehicle to renew multilateralism and set right inequalities and other ills that have led to lack of effectiveness, lack of leadership and lack of trust in current global governance arrangements among countries and people. Interesting insights and proposals by a forthcoming FEPS report, including on the current unfair financial system, trade and more. The UN Secretary-General's set of proposals in "Our Common Agenda" is a key reference on the way forward but more ambitious interventions are needed if we are to get a global governance system that is inclusive, people-centred, fair and no longer dominated by a few actors from the Global North.

This report ( below) on the growing influence of the G77 internationally, and within policy & decision- making fora such as those belonging to the United Nations system. It is often said these days the the “ world order” is in flux. This perception of global disruption and flux mostly concerns the changing balance of power between the the Euro- American ( Western) political axis and much of the rest of the world ( eg G 77 , BRICS etc). A report like this is important because it provides a detailed and informed analysis of how the G 77 is structured, how power is distributed between its member countries etc. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in geopolitics, the emerging new world order and the the future of the U.N. multilateral system…..

This policy brief provides a nice overview of the challenge to 'localize the SGDs' written by a team of smart and experienced UN colleagues. Among others, the policy brief advocates for evidence-based localization of the SDGs. Unfortunately, the report itself does not suggest any metrics for us to determine whether countries are doing a good job localizing the SDGs. The world has 611,833 regional and local governments. It strikes me that more important than counting how many subnational governments have a 'Voluntary Local Review' is to count how many have a citizen-centric and result-based strategic plan. Perhaps even more important would be to develop metrics to assess whether countries have "create[d] an enabling environment for SDG localization and strengthen multilevel governance for sustainable development". These are some of the challenges that the Local Public Sector Alliance is working to solve. Let's work together to elevate the debate and to catalyze action on localizing the SDGs.
Director, Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development at United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs
➡️ With at least 65 per cent of SDG targets linked to the work and mandates of local and regional governments, there is an urgent need to accelerate SDG localization to improve policy coherence and integration by bolstering whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches for sustainable development. Read the new UN inter-agency policy brief on SDG localization which outlines a series of recommendations for the future here: https://lnkd.in/esiqUhic
