The State Maritime Academies of the United States are entrusted with the crucial role of developing the next generation of officers for the merchant marine. Learn more about the progressive steps the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has taken to modernize the academies' training capabilities by decommissioning and replacing the current fleet of training ships with the introduction of National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMVs) in the Spaces4Learning article "One if by Land & Two if by Sea.” With every new addition, these institutions are met with considerable infrastructure overhauls to accommodate the arrival of the NSMVs while balancing the existing infrastructural demands. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is embarking on a five-year, $25M study to determine the best approach for long-term management of the Mississippi River from Cape Girardeau, Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico. This study will evaluate alternatives to address opportunities and challenges in the areas of Flood Risk Management, Navigation, Ecosystem and Environmental Restoration, Water Supply and Quality, Hydropower, Recreation, and more. During the Scoping stage, USACE is reviewing all existing data, previous studies, and modeling efforts while consulting with partners to identify a large suite of alternatives to carry forward in the evaluation. Public engagement and comment are critical to ensuring the study path forward is developed using the best information available. USACE has developed a team from the Mississippi Valley Division, the St. Louis, Memphis, Vicksburg, and New Orleans districts, and representatives from the seven states located within the study area. The focus of these meetings is to listen to the public. As decisions are made, USACE will return to the public to share findings and receive additional input. The LMRCMS is a critical step toward ensuring a resilient and sustainable Mississippi River for future generations. USACE is committed to working closely with each state’s representatives and to sharing updates on its progress as the planning process continues. A successful study must be based on the best science, engineering, and information available. In some circumstances the loss of containers causes an environmental impact such as the 2009 case of the Pacific Adventurer in Queensland. In this presentation, Dr Kieran Dodworth (Head of Naval Architecture , Brookes Bell) sets out some of the lessons he has learned from his extensive experience in container losses and sets out weaknesses in the regulatory framework. Dr Dodworth’s focus on lesser known features of container stack behaviour which he considers to be one of the most complex structures in the marine environment. Thank you to many around the country who read and responded to my article "The Case for a Fifth Naval Shipyard" in USNI Proceeding's September issue. I would like to especially thank Mr. Benjamin Turon for his contribution in his "letter to the editor" suggesting revitalizing San Francisco's Hunters Point shipyard infrastructure as another possible solution to quickly rebuilding shipbuilding / repair infrastructure. Mr. Turon's suggestion is certainly logical, and many have reached out and recommended various ex-shipyards ranging from New Orleans to Alaska. I do suggest Baltimore and Alameda as potential sites for a maintenance-focused fifth naval shipyard. However writing this article was an exercise in solidifying a framework for considering the various number of infrastructure, workforce, security and socioeconomic factors that is required prior to breaking ground. My next shipbuilding-focused research is in analyzing various policy tools that the United States Government could use to nurture an infant shipbuilding industry. Again, I am always open to questions and comments, and look forward what I can contribute to in this space. #navy #shipbuilding #infrastructure

BL - many effective and more efficient means are available, other than conducting Amphibious Assault operations, to repel advancing forces The technological cabilities to establish ‘advanced naval stations’, leveraging archaic Amphip displacement hulled vessels, is the same condition as the repeating rifle / gatling gun did to colonial infantry formations…. Induced ‘Manuver Warfare’ into the ground combat side Sea Basing model of a ‘Iron Mountain’ Afloat is the same as those stationary on land …. Possible desired capability… An integrated ‘Objective Key Performace Parameter’ would appear to be Theater and Tactical level ‘Displaced Navy/MC Logistics’ supporting several ‘Seabased manuver warfare Ampibs’ that rapidly deploy ‘Self supporting Ampib Assault Forces’ that are no longer constrained to current ‘aluminum canoe technologies’ and inadequate armor for shore advancements

It became a cornerstone for naval architecture in the U.S., providing critical insights into ship resistance, propulsion, and stability. The Taylor Standard Series: Taylor’s meticulous testing led to the creation of the “Taylor Standard Series,” a set of data derived from systematic experiments on hull forms. This series provided a framework for predicting ship performance based on hull geometry, speed, and displacement, revolutionizing ship design practices. World War I Contributions: During World War I, Taylor played a crucial role in designing vessels for the U.S. Navy. His work on destroyer hulls and torpedo boat designs significantly enhanced the fleet’s efficiency and combat readiness. His scientific approach ensured that American naval vessels were among the most advanced in the world. Recognition and Legacy: Taylor’s contributions earned him widespread recognition, including the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. The Naval Vessel Taylor-class destroyer escort was named in his honor. Today, his influence persists in modern naval engineering and hydrodynamic research, with the David Taylor Model Basin remaining a vital facility for naval experimentation. Conclusion: David Watson Taylor’s legacy is one of innovation and scientific rigor. By introducing systematic ship model testing to the U.S., he transformed naval architecture and set new standards for ship design.
