Bakers + Baristas, the artisan coffee and baking brand, has reported an increase in turnover and a fall in profit for the year to 31 December 2023. Turnover rose from £12,635,287 in 2022 to £13,400,221 last year. Pre-tax profit fell from £672,303 to £260,744. "a 15% hike, overnight?"  I yell into the receiver, my fist slamming the desk, rage bubbling under my skin. "just the market, you know how it is," he says, that smug tone dripping with indifference. I'm cornered, trapped in his game, margins teetering on the edge. I trudge back to my domain, the weight of potential collapse on my shoulders. a crumpled invoice, a glimpse of the scam - my competitor getting a better deal. to expose him, to blow the lid off this whole mess, would be my undoing, lawyers and fees,  bad press burying my name. better to stay quiet, switch vendors, salvage what I can. the tomatoes, the carrots, the fruits of my labor - weapons in this war of attrition. a simple message, "we're done," and a new deal struck, margins back under control. who knew haggling over produce  could bring such sweet victory? the best deal, the one you walk away from - a hard-won respect, priceless. #FoodCost #RestaurantBusiness #RestaurantOperation #FoodandBeverageBusiness #FastFoodBusiness #CasualDiningBusiness

Happy to be on WUSA Channel 9 to support small businesses. The legislature made a promise to small business owners that neither chains nor supermarkets could have beer, wine and liquor licenses. Many small business owners invested their entire net worth in their businesses when they relied on the legislature's promise. If the legislature breaks this promise then individuals, many of them recent immigrants, will face financial ruin. Yes, other states have supermarkets with beer, wine and liquor. In those states, when the small business opens, those small business owners know that supermarkets and chains carry beer wine and liquor.
