NOSTALGIC RETAIL SERIES: #4 - F.W. WOOLWORTH COMPANY Going old school here. Founded in 1879, Woolworth’s sold general merchandise and was called “five and dime” because everything sold for 10 cents or less (the precursor to dollar stores and Five Below). By 1929, there were 2,250 stores. “Despite its growing to be one of the largest retail chains in the world through most of the 20th century, increased competition led to its decline beginning in the 1980s, even while its sporting goods division grew.” [Wikipedia] The chain went out of business in July 1997, when the company decided to shift its primary focus to sporting goods (Footlocker believe it or not - so named in 2001). Woolworth’s name survived internationally, even though it had nothing to do with the U.S. company. Woolworths was an innovator and trendsetter that created many retail practices still in use today including merchandising strategies, direct purchasing, sales and customer service practices! Target, the 100,000 square foot convenience store? Think about it, most of their assortments are not well defined, not specific on what and whom they are working to take share from, seem to be a copy of something or someone else, focused on corporate compliance on execution regardless of how it's viewed by the consumer....CPG focused on having more brands than anyone else regardless of the value to Target or the consumer...not interested any longer in a differentiated operational experience, Walmart headed into their space, Target haphazardly trying to head into theirs without a plan...no strategy in grocery to compete with any of the leaders in that segment.... I think I finally figured it out, they will be the convenience retailer to Walmart, Costco, TJX, Publix, Whole Foods, etc......there are no other options. That's the only explanation I can come up with regarding how their management is actually strategizing the business.....including their latest hire of another executive with no retail background....

Sometimes you need to tip your cap to the giants. In this case, let's take a moment to marvel at the magnitude of Walmart's reach and dominance. When reviewing YoY visit data for leaders in the Superstore and Wholesale spaces, we noted in a recent blog post that some like Costco Wholesale and Target were outpacing the retail behemoth. Yet, taking a step back shows that even in just this category, and even compared to some of the biggest and strongest players in retail - not to mention not counting Sam's Club or Walmart Neighborhood Market - Walmart still held over 60% of the overall national visit share. And there's still areas for growth. The map below shows the relative dominance by state indicating opportunities in certain regions. TLDR version - Walmart is very strong, and very, very good at retail.
