Goodbye for now Toronto! It has been an interesting few days here at #priinperson, but also alarming. Despite growing awareness of the global challenges we are facing, the finance industry generally does not seem to really grasp the dire situation we are in. We have limited time to avoid reaching global climate tipping points, and when we hit that mark, values will be destroyed beyond comprehension. The fact that so very few of the brilliant minds in this business is actually focussing on real world emission cuts and rather more reporting, tells a story by itself. The window for action other than mitigation is closing fast, and it is time to get serious. The only thing that matters is real world emissions cuts, and the only time that matters is now.
Here’s part of my contribution to #priinperson Later on in the day, tornadoes adjacent to Hurricane Milton ripped through the retirement community my grandparents live in, in Martin County, Florida. Thankfully they weren’t there. Friends just blocks away lost their homes. Octagenarians, nonagenarians, sheltered terrified in their bathrooms as their windows were blown out. They weren’t even in the evacuation zone. (This is not my family’s first experience of climate catastrophe, having lived though the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20 on the Australian east coast.) This is not a drill. This is here, now. Investors are not acting. Are not using the formal and informal power they have to reduce real world emissions, which is the only thing we can do to prevent this crisis from spiralling further out of control. Of course there were welcome contributions at PRI, including those of my fellow panellists. But the conference program did not appropriately foreground urgency. Yet another opportunity missed. It’s getting hard to know what else to say.

It’s not a drill. Humans are short term thinkers and even then we’re ignoring the effects of climate change here and now. Why would we destroy the planet? We need to act now to slow climate change and at least limit the damage. Consume less. Walk and take public transport. Recycle. Use renewable energy. Avoid unnecessary packaging. Support innovation. Reject the status quo. You know the drill. If everyone does their part, we can all make a difference.

Cleaning Up Humanity's Mess and Getting Zero credit. Everyone Else Gets the Credit In the aftermath of hurricanes like Helene and Milton, society comes together in a beautiful display of camaraderie. Emergency responders save lives, volunteers deliver hot meals, and neighbors help neighbors rebuild. Meanwhile, the waste and recycling industry is quietly doing what it does best—clearing the wreckage of human existence and getting absolutely zero recognition for it. First responders get parades. Waste and recycling professionals get garbage-scented thank-yous, if they’re lucky. But let’s be clear: these are the unsung heroes hauling away the tangled mess of trees, drywall, and the shattered remnants of optimism that natural disasters leave behind. I wanted to share a powerful new video created by A Final Take Films that highlights the incredible work of the United Way of the Midlands and their 211 team during times of disaster. When devastating tornadoes swept through our communities in April, the 211 team was there—immediately stepping in to provide support, resources, and hope to those in need. At the same time, United Way of the Midlands quickly established the Nebraska and Iowa Tornado Relief Fund, which continues to assist individuals facing long-term challenges. This story isn’t just about one community—it’s about the power of 211 nationwide. Across the country, 211 teams are providing the same level of care, serving as a beacon of hope for people navigating their darkest moments. From connecting individuals to vital resources to offering information and referrals that help them thrive, 211 is here to make a difference. At some point, either you or someone you know may need help. When that time comes, know that 211 is just a call away. 👉 Watch the video and see the impact for yourself. Let’s continue to spread the word about the vital role of 211 and the life-changing work it accomplishes every day. https://lnkd.in/gycsH9Vi

#Water brings life and hope. But 1 in 4 people on the planet lack proper access to clean drinking water. Today is #WorldWaterDay, and we want to bring awareness to the 2.2 billion people that currently live without this basic necessity. From rural villages to hurricane torn towns to farmers needing water for their crops — clean water shouldn't be a luxury. To help bridge that gap, give a gift to Convoy's clean water fund at https://h.ope.is/3xeTjmT. Read about how Convoy brings clean water to our global programming at https://h.ope.is/43t7XTE.

As we begin to recover from our deadly heat wave and respond to wildfires, I'm thinking of the people of Texas, where Hurricane Beryl has left millions w/o power amidst high summer heat. Across the country, we're seeing the urgent need for investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, both hard and soft. Hard infrastructure is our energy system, water management, roads, etc. Soft infrastructure includes education, healthcare, emergency response, community, labor, and faith-based organizing, and other networks of community care which we may have to reimagine just like we need to reenvision our hard infrastructure to prepare for a climate-resilient future. While daunting, it does mean there are a million ways to contribute to building our climate resilience, which is what I tell high school and college students looking to their future.

This article combines risk management, philanthropy, and strategic planning. IMO the answer to the question of supporting current relief efforts or long-term recovery is BOTH, AND! Help is needed now with recovery efforts. It will continue to be needed long-term. We also have to help nonprofits create plans for future problems to mitigate risks that may happen. What do you think?
Many U.S. communities are being struck by one extreme weather event after another. As climate change increases the frequency and severity of storms like Hurricanes Helene and Milton, some within philanthropy are questioning how funders are approaching the evolving situation. Foundations and individual donors should not only be focused on immediate relief but also providing longer term support that can help communities survive through the rebuilding process and become more resilient in the face of ongoing and emerging climate threats, including extreme heat, Tanya Gulliver-Garcia of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy said.
