It is with mixed emotions that we announce that our co-founder, Kim Renshaw, will be stepping down from her role at Reuse Aotearoa, effective 1 September 2024. Kim has been absolutely instrumental in getting Reuse Aotearoa off-the-ground and supporting its ongoing growth. She has adeptly managed all the organisation’s projects, secured funding for our mahi, and undertaken untold numbers of admin, accounting, contractual and other wrangling tasks! She also found time to develop a successful series of specialist workshops on reusable packaging, produce guidance on implementing reusable packaging at events, and present our research at conferences. Kim will leave a big gap at Reuse Aotearoa - we’ll especially miss her amazing organisational skills, her steadfast commitment to reuse and sustainability, her deep and detailed knowledge of reusable packaging systems, and her deadpan sense of humour that can bring hilarity to many otherwise trying scenarios. We are incredibly grateful for Kim's contribution, and immensely proud of the work we have accomplished together. In just three years, Reuse Aotearoa has conducted novel research on reusable packaging systems in New Zealand, provided education and facilitated collaboration around reuse, and made significant progress in elevating the conversation around reusable packaging amongst a range of stakeholders. Reuse Aotearoa will continue our mahi under the leadership of Hannah Blumhardt, with the release of our latest report, next week: Return to Reuse: The potential role for Waikato's territorial authorities and resource recovery sector in support reverse logistics for reusable packaging. We wish Kim all the very best for her future roles. She will continue to be contactable via her organisation, Beyond the Bin: kim@beyondthebin.org.nz

🌱 Reuse in action # 2 - ReuSe Vanguard Project 🌍 Launched in 2021, the ReuSe Vanguard Project (RSVP) by Zero Waste Europe aims to create the conditions for a large uptake of reusable packaging in the most strategic sectors, such as beverages and take-away food and drinks. Reuse organisations and experts designed and implemented a shared but adaptable model for reusable takeaway packaging currently enforced in 6 major European cities (Barcelona, Berlin, Ghent, Leuven, Paris, Rotterdam). Furthermore, the project makes sure that policymakers and key stakeholders at local, European, and international levels are well-informed about reuse systems and their operational requirements. The project is built of 4 core strategies: ◆ Creating a European communication strategy and campaign ◆ Co-designing reuse models and co-learning with RSVP partners ◆ Creating enabling conditions through advocacy practices and by funding the transition ◆ Finalise a Blueprint to harmonise and coordinate implementation work starting with 6 core city projects 📍One of the outcomes of the project is the RSVP blueprint, a shared ‘universal’ model setting clear definitions, minimum requirements, and KPIs to develop the shared infrastructure. It supports and harmonises the creation of a well-performing and resilient reuse infrastructure development model in urban areas across Europe. At the moment 6 cities participate in the project: Barcelona, Berlin, Ghent, Leuven, Paris and Rotterdam. Find out more about theReuSe Vanguard Project here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-UzS8Pi

♻️ 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞? ♻️ circolution believes in 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭, not reuse above all else. What exactly does this mean? 🤔 1️⃣ circolution works towards a reuse system that benefits both customers and the environment. By comparing the LCAs of single-use and reusable packaging for a given product, we will model scenarios where reusable packaging is ecologically superior to single-use. We need accountable solutions instead of greenwashing. 🌱 2️⃣ From public data on the water and beer reusable system, we know that reusable packaging is ecologically superior to single-use packaging within a certain radius. Based on our current assumptions and data, we believe reuse makes sense within an 𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐬 of approximately 300 km. 📈 In this way, we ensure that our reusable packaging provides a real benefit for the environment. Let’s discover a new built-environment start-up in Munich! Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting Marlene Stechl, co-founder of HopfON . #HopfON is an innovative startup focussing on the development of sustainable building materials using hop harvest waste. Marlenes’ vision to create eco-friendly, high-performance materials made of waste material is truly inspiring, and we are excited to see how their work will shape a more sustainable future. It was great to learn more about Hopfon’s mission and how they’re revolutionizing the way we think about waste in construction. Looking forward to seeing their continued success! 🏗️♻️ HopfON is a Start-up based in Munich, founded in 2022 by Marlene Stechl and Thomas Rojas Sonderegger. They developed sustainable building materials from hop harvest waste. HopfON is supported by Technical University of Munich. As a first business case HopfON developed acoustic panels tested in the NEXT MANNHEIM project. What we learned about hop: Ⓜ️The Hallertau in Bavaria is the center of hop cultivation and research in Germany. The region produces more than 80% of the annual German hop harvest. With a total area of around 172 km² and more than 800 individual hop farms. Ⓜ️Hop can be sweet. Hop can be bitter 😊 Ⓜ️Only 20% of the annual hop harvest (the flowers of the hop plant) is used for beer production, while 80% is not used and are composted, used as fertilizer, used for the production of biogas or are disposed of as waste. Acoustic panels are usually produced from PU foams, styrofoams, MDF board (pressed wood and glue) or mineral wool, all linear materials which are problematic to recycle. Hop waste is a perfect alternative for a circular alternative using waste as a resource, saving CO2 emissions and being biodegradable. Thus, the development of HopfON is a great example for a circular economy in the built environment. . Let’s build the future together! 🌱 Ⓜ️♾ #HopfON #TheGreatHope #SustainableConstruction #CircularEconomy #EcoFriendlyMaterials #GreenBuilding #Innovation #ClimateAction #HopWaste

Exploring Sustainable Innovation with Kelpi at Science Creates in Bristol 🌊 Turning the Tide on Plastic Packaging with Kelpi 🌊 Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Kelpi, a fascinating company based at the Science Creates incubator in Bristol. Kelpi is at the forefront of sustainable innovation, creating bioplastic coatings from seaweed that offer world-leading water barrier properties. It was inspiring to see their commitment to tackling plastic pollution and climate change head-on. Neil Morris, Kelpi’s CEO, shared insights into their journey, purpose and how the banks funding has provided support in this. Kelpi’s bioplastic coatings are designed to replace traditional plastic packaging with sustainable alternatives. Kelpi thrives within the Science Creates ecosystem, founded by Dr. Harry Destecroix. This ecosystem supports deep tech innovation through specialised incubators, a dedicated venture capital fund, and a robust mentoring community. Harry, having sold his startup Ziylo to Novo Nordisk, has reinvested in fostering new scientific enterprises. Neil highlighted the alarming prevalence of microplastics in our environment and discussed the challenges posed by the plastic industry’s reliance on consumer recycling, despite the low actual recycling rates. Kelpi aims to mitigate this by developing biodegradable alternatives that can either be efficiently recycled or naturally decompose. Product Development and Testing: Dr. Stefanie Federle provided a tour of their lab, showcasing: 1️⃣ Production Process: The stages of creating their bioplastic. 2️⃣ Performance Testing: Ensuring the material meets necessary standards. 3️⃣ End-of-Life Testing: Assessing how the product decomposes or is recycled. They also demonstrated potential applications, such as using their bioplastic as a thin layer on cardboard to create waterproof containers. This layer can be removed during recycling or naturally degrade if left to decompose. It was great to hear about other Bristol based companies innovating in this space such as Matter, which focuses on filtering microplastics from washing machines. Their shared goal is to reduce plastic pollution through advanced technology and sustainable practices. Thank you to Neil Morris and Dr. Stefanie Federle for the enlightening visit and for Edward Tellwright for organising it. It’s clear that Kelpi’s work is crucial in the fight against plastic pollution and in paving the way for a more sustainable future. 🌱🔬 #Sustainability #Innovation #Bristol #PlasticFree #Bioplastics #Entrepreneurship #BBBLife
