In the 19th century, the area now known as the Central Africa Republic (CAR) became a French colony. Initially, it was known as the French Congo and then it became Ubangi-Shari. The French exploited the land and dominated the people. In 1960, Ubangi-Shari achieved independence. Since gaining independence CAR has experienced decades of violence and instability. Today, armed militia groups still occupy most of the country. There have been attacks against Christians with churches torched, and Christians displaced. In this context the Bible Society in the Central African Republic is working to bring Bibles to vulnerable people. It is providing audio Bibles and establishing listening groups. If you kill someone's child or sibling or mother or father, you can bet that they will likely hate you for the rest of their lives. Some may join militant groups. In fact, many members of Hamas are young men whose family members have been murdered by the IDF. Last year, Burkina Faso surpassed Afghanistan as the country most impacted by terrorism, with nearly 2,000 terrorism-related deaths – indicating a shift in global terrorism from the Middle East to the Sahel region. Islamist groups target both Christians and Muslims, but converts from Islam face threats to renounce their faith in Jesus. Many believers have fled due to instability, leaving churches empty. A friend of INcontext shared that combating terrorism is complex. While not all areas are affected, some are so unsafe that military presence is constantly needed. He urged the global Church to pray for wise government decisions and that another coup will be prevented. This Sunday, all evangelical churches will fast and pray for peace. Despite these challenges, ministries and churches continue to train and send out individuals to spread the message of Jesus in rural areas and provide spiritual and psychological support to those affected by violence. Many Christians who had drifted from their faith before the crisis are now returning to Jesus. The persecution has strengthened their faith. Despite the affliction, Christians in Burkina Faso are not crushed, placing their trust in Jesus and finding solace and strength in Him.
