I'm always baffled when companies ask for a brand manager or "social media manager" but they start asking applicants to have huge social media followership. Do you need an influencer or a social media manager or you want employee advocacy? People who do not share their lives on social media can still be excellent social media managers. In fact, I know many of them. A huge followership can be a good way to assess an applicant, especially a beginner. However, an even better competence assessment can be done by looking at an actual portfolio or work history of the applicants. What you want is effective strategies and achieving your actual goals, not just meaningless numbers that may not be relevant to your business. Traditionally, the industry spotlight has been on external influencers, while internal influence has been an afterthought. Times are changing, though. Companies are being asked to do more with less, and organizations are waking up to the impact and cost-effectiveness of employee advocacy.
