If you have landed here after curiously looking at the image clickbait below, here is a case that I had encountered & helped a NetSuite client win in the market. Mr. ABC, a seasoned finance & pricing analyst in the food and beverages industry. His recent experience with a long-standing client proved once again how financial acumen, coupled with strategic decision-making, & ONE RIGHT REPORT could turn a challenge into an opportunity. One day, during a customer profitability analysis, Mr. ABC noticed that a client, a medium-sized restaurant chain, had recently expanded its operations but struggled with cost overruns. While analyzing their financial data, Mr. ABC identified that certain high-margin products consistently boosted the client's profitability, but others low-margin items—were dragging overall profits down. This is where blended margins became a game-changer. Blended margins represent the average profitability across all products or services sold to a customer, weighted by sales volume. It provides a holistic view of how individual products contribute to the overall profitability of a customer relationship. Mr. ABC delved deeper into the numbers, conducting a customer profitability analysis—a process that evaluates the total revenue generated from a customer against all costs associated with serving them. He identified that one of the client’s bestselling items, a premium beverage, had a significant profit margin. However, a complementary snack offering had a much lower margin. The restaurant’s operations team had expressed interest in introducing a new line of desserts but was hesitant due to perceived cost implications to produce in-house. Mr. ABC proposed a bold move: cross-sell the new dessert at a seemingly "throwaway" price, paired with the premium beverage. Here’s the catch: While the dessert alone offered a slim margin, the combined sale of the beverage and dessert increased the blended margin significantly in comparison the complementary snack offered earlier. By bundling the two products, Mr. ABC ensured that the overall profitability of the transaction remained intact—even elevated. When presented with this strategy, the restaurant chain embraced it wholeheartedly. The result? A 30% increase in average ticket size and delighted customers who loved the value-packed combo. Over the next quarter, the restaurant chain reported not just higher revenue but also a notable improvement in overall customer profitability. For Mr. ABC, this success reaffirmed a crucial lesson: Customer profitability isn't about maximizing margins on every single product; it's about creating a balanced portfolio of offerings that drives overall value. By using blended margins as a guiding principle, businesses can make informed pricing decisions, confidently cross-sell, and strengthen customer relationships—all while keeping an eye on the bottom line. What’s your approach to maintaining customer profitability? Let’s discuss. #NetSuite

3moThank you greatly for the reporting! While the October step-up to positive traffic is very good news, a review of the June-Septembe trends shows that the QSR sector remained in negative traffic territory throughout the June-August period of heavy media driven discounting. This is the most recent confirmation that #restaurant price wars yield little, becuase everyone if doing it. It is hard to stand out. There is no doubt that this is period of extreme consumer price sensitivity (hat tip: R. J. Hottovy, CFA Placer.ai ). To make it all work, the non-price aspects of value need improvement, too.
