Everyone engaged in teaching should read this! It's about how teaching is really more than education on a certain subject matter, and very much in line with The Pedogogy of the Oppressed, and learning to play for freedom, as I learned through playing Capoiera. "During my year and a half with the Auburn University program, I started to think of education as a kind of smuggling, too. Though I was ostensibly there as an administrative assistant and to teach a general interest course about China, the educational exchanges that occurred went far beyond this scope. My experiences convinced me that prison education can act as an institutionally legitimate package through which educators can bring knowledge, intellectual resources, perspectives, and opportunities sorely needed in prisons. For self-reflective educators, prison education offers the chance to co-pilot radical, life-affirming learning journeys with some of the most motivated but disinherited people in the United States. Now is the time for educators to claim these people as students and reorient their vocation to align with the urgent goal of ending mass incarceration—the most brutal system our society currently wields to manage inequality." https://lnkd.in/eAvCjRFh

Imagine a world where education can break through prison walls, becoming a bridge to a brighter future. Inside prisons, many individuals face limited access to educational opportunities. These limitations can hinder their chances of successful reintegration into society. But what if we could change that narrative? Education programs within prisons can equip individuals with valuable skills, foster personal growth, and reduce recidivism rates. By learning new trades, enhancing literacy, and gaining a sense of purpose, individuals are empowered to break the cycle and build a positive life after release. Look at the work that GLA group do to see how successful these programmes are! #prisoneducation #skills #positive

This research by Kurtis Tanaka, PhD and Tammy Ortiz about #library spaces inside #prisons is vital to understand carceral spaces and systems. Many thanks to our colleagues at Ithaka S+R for this work. "Perhaps one of the greatest stumbling blocks, however, comes from the perception that departments of corrections function as a single monolithic entity, which, though a convenient shorthand, obscures the many different roles, units, and philosophies a single department of corrections, or even a single prison, may contain." https://lnkd.in/e67n_2sS

Take a look at Volume 2 of the Journal of Higher Education in Prison! Established in 2019, the Alliance’s JHEP is the only open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated exclusively to the field of higher education in prison. Volume 2 continued the work of our inaugural volume by providing a platform for an emerging intellectual community to address the unique challenges of teaching and learning within prisons. This edition features three types of essays: - Keynote Address (conversations from a virtual addendum following the 2021 National Conference on Higher Education in Prison in Denver) - Contemporary Perspectives - Various articles, such as Rachel Oppenheim’s “The Carceral Classroom as a Site of Multiple Fantasies” By facilitating conversation on theory, praxis, and teaching, the Alliance’s JHEP aims to enhance educational opportunities for students who are currently incarcerated and alumni of prison education programs. We invite practitioners, students, advocates, policymakers, and scholars to engage with and contribute to this vital discourse. 📖 Explore Volume 2 and join us in promoting quality higher education in prison! https://lnkd.in/gCuufXG3 #TheAlliance #AHEP #HigherEdInPrison #JHEP #PeerReviewed

🚀 Support Meaningful Criminal Justice Reform in New York🚀 I'm calling on employers and advocacy organizations to join the movement for impactful change by supporting two critical bills championed by FWD.us: The Earned Time Act and The Second Look Act These legislative initiatives provide meaningful incentives for incarcerated New Yorkers to participate in vocational and educational programs. This not only reduces recidivism but also contributes to the safety and well-being of our communities, both inside and outside of prison walls. 🔹 The Earned Time Act: Encourages personal development and rehabilitation by allowing incarcerated individuals to earn reduced sentences through active participation in educational and vocational programs. 🔹 The Second Look Act: Offers a chance for reconsideration of sentences after a significant period, promoting fairness and a second chance for those who have shown genuine reform. Reach out directly for more information! #CriminalJusticeReform #SupportTheEarnedTimeAct #SupportTheSecondLookAct #ReduceRecidivism #CommunitySafety #FWDUS
Providing meaningful incentives for New Yorkers to participate in vocational programs while incarcerated would decrease recidivism, making New Yorkers both inside & outside of prisons safer. Thank you Jodi Anderson Jr. for advocating for The Earned Time & Second Look Acts.

‘Our model for prison education could be key to reducing re-offending’ 🔑 Andy Moss, Chief Customer Officer at City & Guilds, spoke to FE Week on the life-changing link between skills development and social mobility. We know that the relationship between high-quality skills training, access to employment opportunities and community integration is obvious, and has significant impacts on reducing reoffending. Through our work in prisons, such as our partnership with HMP Highpoint and their Rail Centre of Excellence, we have seen first-hand the impact of skills development on prison leavers, with over 75 per cent of our graduates are still in employment six months after release.
