"Wellbeing washing", is the over saturation of unhelpful initiatives that might look or sound "cool" on paper, but that don't actually have evidence behind them, or are not implemented in a meaningful or integrated way. It is the leader pushing for stand alone resilience training while fostering a culture of burn out. It is the addition of wellbeing days without the workplace culture that enables people to take them. It is the reward and recognition program that isn't applied fairly and is tokenistic. We have all seen it. So what do we do about it? #wellbeingwashing #workplacementalhealth #workplacewellbeing

Having worked on numerous wellbeing and wellness initiatives in the workplace over the years as a HR professional and executive leader, and noting greater reports of workplace stress and burnout, it is timely to see John Chan, Ph.D.’s recent post and insightful article, ‘Navigating the Joint Ownership of Wellbeing in the Workplace.’ This collaborative effort by well regarded experts and thought leaders on the topic from Infinite Potential and KPMG underscores a critical perspective that I wholeheartedly endorse: the shared responsibility for workplace wellbeing. 💡💡💡Here are my three key takeouts and reflections on this article: 1️⃣ Organisational Responsibility Organisations must cultivate a culture that prioritises mental and physical health. This involves implementing robust support systems, regular assessment of job roles and the work context, a menu of flexible arrangements, and fostering an inclusive environment where employees feel valued and heard. This includes removing the taboo and fear by employees on speaking up about their state of wellness. The more we understand, the better we can navigate. Leaders plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for this culture, ensuring that wellbeing is not just a policy or a range of quick fix initiatives, but a core value and an ongoing and sustainable program of work. 2️⃣ Individual Responsibility While organisations lay the groundwork, individuals must take charge of their personal wellbeing. This means leveraging available resources, maintaining open communication with management, and practicing self-care. Personal accountability in managing stress, seeking help when needed, and supporting peers can create a ripple effect that enhances overall workplace morale and optimises performance. Healthier employees lead to healthier organisational results. 3️⃣ Building Trust: The Linchpin As highlighted by John, trust is the bedrock of this joint responsibility. Trust that organisations will provide the necessary tools and support, and trust that employees will engage with these resources earnestly. Building or enhancing this trust requires consistent, ethical and transparent actions from both sides. It's time to act. Both employers and employees must move beyond the 'who' and focus on the 'how.' How can we, together, create a thriving, sustainable work environment? This brilliant article offers a clear and tangible roadmap, but the real journey starts with each one of us committing to the cause. Thank you John Chan, Ph.D. and KPMG. 🟢🔜 Join us at the upcoming Australian HR Institute (AHRI) NSW State Conference on 26 June at the Ivy, Sydney to hear more from John Chan, Ph.D. on Beyond Burnout: Futureproofing Work through Workplace Sustainability. Who is responsible for wellbeing in the workplace? Is it the organisation? Is it individuals? The answer is Yes. I'm very excited to share this new article (the first in a series) written in collaboration with Andrew Dempster and Elizabeth Wood from KPMG Australia and Sally Clarke. Andrew and Elizabeth have been doing amazing work within the health system to make positive systemic changes for those in care so they can in turn deliver excellence for those in need. The article discusses (with specific examples) the role that organisations and individuals need to play in creating a healthy and sustainable workplace. The key to success will be the ability of the two sides to build (or rebuild) trust. Trust that each will show up for the other. "It’s time to put aside the debate about who is responsible for workplace wellbeing and get on with taking action. " Have a read and let me know what you think. Thanks! #workplacewellbeing #culture #leadership #futureofwork #burnout #workplacesustainability

Do employers risk undermining their own wellbeing strategy with an inauthentic approach? Our research found that the top reason for implementing a #wellbeing strategy given by employers was to improve productivity rather than to promote a healthier and more inclusive culture. This could lead to employees feeling cynical about employers’ offerings, particularly if leaders are not leading by example and an unhealthy working environment persists, despite the employer publicly stating the importance it places on wellbeing.
