A family member was notified that personal information was compromised. It did not raise too much concern since we put in some measures to mitigate the risk. Then I look back a couple of months back, collectively we did get notification of more than 4 instances of such events from various sources. It made me think if we are getting numb, and do not warrant the kind of reaction unlike before, where we rush out and check our transaction history and lock our profiles. Now it is ehhh. I did put a little thought into it, on why we now have muted reaction from such compromises. And ding (light bulb moment 😊 ) we are distracted, with all the conflict, upcoming election, storm, coming holiday and amazon prime day, cybersecurity falls off on our thoughts. But I think we should take this time to reassess our security posture, because once those other distraction pass, guess where the bad actors, attention will turn to. Remember it is not if but when, we do get hit, and the more important part is how you dust off yourself and be able to move on as if , it is just a minor trip, or a bad stumble, that you fail to anticipate, and on your way up, you hit the table with your head and slips back and fall, before you finally steady yourself. I hope it is the latter like the saying goes, if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

Ring customers get $5.6 million in privacy breach settlement The FTC is sending $5.6 million in refunds to Ring users whose private video feeds were accessed without consent by Amazon employees and contractors, or had their accounts and devices hacked because of insufficient security protections. The action is part of a settlement following a complaint from May 2023 alleging that Ring failed to implement adequate security measures to protect the devices from unauthorized access. In the original complaint, FTC alleged that Ring allowed its employees unlimited access to people’s Ring devices to help them increase productivity and development pace. Additionally, Ring also gave high-level access to customer support agents, including hundreds of third-party contractors located in Ukraine and elsewhere, who operated without restrictions to protect customers against abusive access. Apart from lax policies for internal access, FTC also alleged that Ring failed to implement basic security measures such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) until 2019, which led to easier user account hijacking and access to private video feeds through credential stuffing and brute-forcing attacks. https://lnkd.in/ezjD42sH #cybersecurity #cyberattack #cybercrime #cyberrisk #cyberthreats #informationsecurity #infosec #breach #databreach #malware #google #bing #networksecurity #technicalsupport #itservices #itsupport #dataprotection #datasecurity #itnews #hackingprevention #cloudsecurity #riskmanagement #fbi #vciso #securityexpert #cisa #financialrisk #manufacturing #iot #ransomware
