Due to the ever-changing nature of damp and mould issues, there’s currently no standardised approach for their reporting and remediation. Historically, dealing with damp and mould in social housing has relied on tenants self-reporting problems, followed by lengthy investigations and time-consuming site visits, potentially leading to costly repairs and compensation, and tenants feeling helpless and neglected. In his Spotlight Report, The Housing Ombudsman highlighted there needs to be a shift in the "culture, behaviour, and approach by [landlords] from being reactive to proactive, and from inferring blame to taking responsibility."
