Now I share about Fourier transforms Fourier transform (FT) is an integral transform that takes a function as input and outputs another function that describes the extent to which various frequencies are present in the original function. The output of the transform is a complex-valued function of frequency. The term Fourier transform refers to both this complex-valued function and the mathematical operation. When a distinction needs to be made, the output of the operation is sometimes called the frequency domain representation of the original function. The Fourier transform is analogous to decomposing the sound of a musical chord into the intensities of its constituent pitches. An example application of the Fourier transform is determining the constituent pitches in a musical waveform. This image is the result of applying a constant-Q transform (a Fourier-related transform) to the waveform of a C major piano chord. The first three peaks on the left correspond to the frequencies of the fundamental frequency of the chord (C, E, G). The remaining smaller peaks are higher-frequency overtones of the fundamental pitches. A pitch detection algorithm could use the relative intensity of these peaks to infer which notes the pianist pressed. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #designthinkers

Timbre is our perception of sound color. It is that subjective dimension that allows us to distinguish between the sound of a violin and a piano playing the same note. The definition by the American Standards Association states that the timbre is “that attribute of sensation in terms of which a listener can judge that two sounds having the same loudness and pitch are dissimilar,” and “timbre depends primarily upon the spectrum of the stimulus, but it also depends upon the waveform, the sound pressure, the frequency location of the spectrum, and the temporal characteristics of the stimulus.”17 Each sound has its unique spectrum. For musical instruments, the spectrum might be quite different for different notes, although they all sound like tones produced by the same instrument. The timbre of a sound produced in a concert hall may even vary with listener position because of the effects of air absorption and because of the frequency-dependent absorption characteristics of room surfaces.

Phrase mixing is an important DJ technique that involves aligning the musical phrases of two tracks to create a seamless transition between them. A phrase in music refers to a section of a song made up of a number of bars, usually an even number like 4 or 8 bars. Phrases are defined by when elements like the beat, bassline, or melody are added or removed from the track. Phrase mixing involves cuing up the incoming track to the beginning of a phrase, and timing the transition so that the phrases of the two tracks line up. Although the literature does not specifically address the role of the saliva layer on the lips, its characteristics have a significant influence on sound production. When the lips are wet, whether due to saliva or other substances, such as after drinking a cup of coffee, it is noticeable that it is more difficult to create the same sound than when the lips are slightly moist or dry. This suggests that the presence and amount of saliva on the lips can affect the vibration and adherence between the lips and the mouthpiece of brass instruments, thus impacting the quality and control of the produced sound. Although not fully documented in the literature yet, practical observations suggest that the saliva layer on the lips plays an important role in the musical performance of wind instruments.
