I once hired a caregiver who looked perfect on paper. Experience? ✅ Certifications? ✅ References? ✅ But within a week, I knew I'd made a mistake. Why? Because while she could perform tasks efficiently, she lacked the one thing you can't teach: Heart. 💔 In senior living, compassion isn't a "nice-to-have." It's everything. Here's how we changed our hiring process to find caregivers with real heart: 1. We ditched the traditional interview. Instead, we asked about past scenarios. "Could you share a SPECIFIC EXAMPLE of a time when a senior refused to take their medication?" The answers revealed more about a candidate's empathy than any resume ever could. 2. We looked for storytellers. The best caregivers don't just recite their experience. They share stories that light up their eyes. "Could you describe a SPECIFIC time when you made a significant difference in a senior's life?” Those who struggle to answer? Red flag. 3. We involved our client’s residents. We invited top candidates to spend an hour in our client’s community. Not to work, but to connect. The residents became our secret weapon in spotting genuine empathy. 4. We asked about personal loss. Tough question? Yes. Revealing? Absolutely. Those who've navigated personal grief often bring a depth of understanding to senior care that's irreplaceable. 5. We prioritized listening skills. In the interview, we'd intentionally speak softly or mumble. The candidates who leaned in, who asked for clarification? They showed us they truly cared about understanding others. Here's the truth: You can teach skills. You can provide training. But you can't manufacture compassion. By focusing on heart first, we've built a team that doesn't just care for our client’s seniors. They cherish them. And the result? Happier residents. 😊 Lower turnover. 📉 A workplace filled with genuine warmth. ❤️ Remember: In senior living, we're not just hiring employees. We're choosing family for the residents. Choose wisely. 🤔 How do you hire for heart in your industry? Share your strategies below! Want more insights on building compassionate, high-performing teams? "...these (caregivers) are probably going to be some of your best candidates because they've been thrown into the fire. They figured it out, and they came out like a champion. Now they're sitting in front of you saying, I'm ready to work. " It is true. #Caregivers can make some of your best candidates for jobs. Christina Keys went from career woman to caregiver when her mother had a life changing stroke in 2013. She cared for her for 10 years. Turning a mess into a message, she is now a National Speaker and Advocate as well as the Founder and CEO of Keys for Caregiving where she is connecting businesses and Family Caregivers to collectively transform the Care Space community and amplify our voices for change. Selma Archer, Esq., MBA and I were honored to interview her for our "Stories From Real Working Caregivers" piece of our newsletter and website. Please read the entire interview here: https://lnkd.in/emHngbRr "If you looked at my resume today on LinkedIn, you'd see that I proudly display “family caregiver.” Because the skills I learned as a family caregiver….my research skills...(are) better than any job I was at. ....... …..As a family caregiver, you are doing med management, case management, you're managing the caregivers that are there. So, you're a leader there too. You're a manager there too…. But you're also doing it in a high stress situation. Why would you not want to put that down? They're going to make an even better candidate than they could possibly be. Because they've gone through things that have been highly emotional, highly stressful. They had to learn things without being… taught anything. They had to learn on the go. " #caringconvos #employer #hiring #workingcaregiver #hr #managers

Recently, I had an experience with an HR representative from a well-known MNC that I’d like to share: Recruiter: “Hi, I am calling from “XYZ”. We like your profile. Could you please tell us about your current designation and CTC and send us your updated CV?” Me: “Thank you for expressing interest in my profile. Sure, I will send my updated CV to you at the earliest. Currently, I am looking to rejoin the corporate world after taking a two-year career break for childcare.” Recruiter: (Long pause) “Oh… I see.” Me: “So, will you send me an email, and I should reply back with my CV?” Recruiter: “Yeah, let me check with my team, and I will get back to you.” Me: “Okay, sure… hello? Hello?” (He disconnected the call.) It seems like taking a career break to focus on childcare has become a new stigma. Many of us make these decisions post-childbirth because one parent needs to prioritize family while the other continues working. It’s disappointing when this reality is met with judgment or dismissal, as if we’ve become incompetent during this time. It’s important to remember that taking a break for family responsibilities should not be seen as a disadvantage. We come back with renewed skills, resilience, and a unique perspective. Let’s change the narrative and support each other in our professional journeys, irrespective of our personal choices. #CareerGaps #EqualOpportunities #DiversityandInclusion #RealityCheck

In February, I will celebrate 18 years in Healthcare recruitment. After all these years, the single hardest thing I ever have to do is... Tell a candidate no. Working closely with candidates make this work so enjoyable. Helping them from the start of the process, all the way to the final stages. You develop a connection. So the worst thing is, having to tell them they are not being selected. Still, it's a necessary part of the role. I do my best to offer words of encouragement and let them down easily. But for many candidates, the disappointment is impossible to hide. And I hear it all. From outrage, to discontent, to shear surprise. Celebrating wins is easy. Helping people deal with failure is our duty. #healthcarerecruitment #executivesearch #physicianrecruitment #underservedmedicine #careercoaching #peopleplacingpeople #px3medical
