Last night, I had a dream that took me back to my 20 years in the military—a time of discipline, respect, and personal courage. When I woke up, I found myself reflecting on how those values have shaped the person I am today, long after hanging up the uniform. The military taught me that discipline isn’t just about following orders; it’s about showing up every day, ready to give your best, no matter the circumstances. Respect means valuing others—their skills, perspectives, and contributions—and building relationships grounded in trust. Personal courage is about stepping into the unknown, facing challenges head-on, and growing through every experience. These lessons have been my foundation as I transitioned into a career in IT. Whether it’s resolving vulnerabilities, building infrastructure, or navigating complex systems, discipline keeps me focused, respect keeps me collaborative, and courage pushes me to take on new opportunities. Outside of work, I’ve been blessed to serve as a volunteer A/V tech for my church, where I use my skills to support my faith community. It’s a reminder that growth isn’t just about professional success—it’s about serving others and living with purpose. Belonging Beyond Individuality: Veterans Leading the Way in Transformation When we celebrate individuality at every turn, we often lose sight of an equally fundamental human need: belonging. The emphasis on standing out, being unique, and defining ourselves by what separates us can overshadow the deeper question of how we truly connect to something larger than ourselves. Veterans, more than most, have lived the tension between individuality and belonging—both in service and beyond. As veterans, we’ve experienced the transformative power of shared purpose. Basic training wasn’t just about learning skills; it was about forging identity, building community, and aligning with something bigger than ourselves. It was a deliberate, challenging, and profound transformation. But when we leave the military, the transition back into a society that prizes individuality over shared mission can feel isolating. To thrive, we don’t just need to transition—we need to transform. True transformation doesn’t mean giving up who we are as veterans; it means expanding that identity. It means finding belonging not just within the “veteran” label but as integrated members of the broader society, where our unique skills, adaptability, and leadership serve the collective good. This isn’t easy, and it’s not comfortable. But it’s essential, and veterans can lead the way in teaching it. Transformation is about more than ourselves—it’s about creating a model for others. It’s about showing how individuality and belonging can coexist, how our differences can be aligned toward a common goal. The military taught us this. And as veterans, we have the opportunity to bring this mindset into the civilian world, building bridges, breaking down silos, and helping others see that labels aren’t what define us—our actions, our connections, and our purpose do. Just like that, it’s over. After 28 years of service, I officially retire from the military today and become a full-time, down-to-Earth space enthusiast. A military career spanning nearly 3 decades, 14 moves, 7 countries, 2 deployments, and thousands of relationships deserves some reflection because of its impact on me and the road ahead. First, those are some rich stats! Not only do they remind me of my chronological position in the human pool, but they also represent my ability to commit and remain loyal to something I greatly enjoy. To those with whom I served, thanks for the camaraderie, community, and memories. Military service is first and foremost a human endeavor and you taught me that anything worth doing is best achieved by using teamwork and collective grit to reach a shared vision. I hope that I provided some value in return. I greatly appreciate the many opportunities to serve as a leader and follower simultaneously, which are essential traits for well-rounded development. I learned how to lead, follow, get out of the way, and the timing for each of them. Leadership and followership feed each other, and the knowledge will help me integrate into any venture involving the need for group cohesion. I’m grateful for serving in a values-based system designed to place character over achievements, which is becoming more of an outlier today. These principles created an ambient level of professional trust that allowed me to perform. I will carry them into my future endeavors as an ode to my military life. However, I won’t carry an identity as a soldier because those days are now gone. I am excited to branch out in life as a global servant, not simply a Constitutional one who is uncomfortable breaking the invisible tether of the defense industry or mindset. I’m not beginning a new chapter of an old book but launching a metaphorical Netflix series with podcast spin-offs. To that end, my operationally and academically diverse career has positioned me as a uniquely qualified practitioner with skills to influence the new space era where I can. It’s made me a multidisciplinary and common-sense outsider with a professional pedigree that’s custom made to break some of space’s institutional thinking. As Day #1, being a proud veteran closes, I turn my attention to the days ahead, the new people I will meet, the sunny place I’ll soon call home, and my new life as an astrophile. To my fellow military women…. don’t let an unfamiliar industry hold you back. Pivoting into a civilian career means stepping into the unknown. For Trish, it meant entering a completely new industry (medical device sales)—one where she had no prior experience, and most of her peers had a head start. But here’s what she discovered: competitiveness is universal It doesn’t matter if you’re starting fresh or navigating a steep learning curve—what matters is the drive to succeed, adapt, and prove to yourself (and others) that you belong. Lean into that competitive edge, using every challenge as an opportunity to grow. It not about being perfect; It’s about showing up, stay hungry, and make the most of the chance you’re given.
