This is how complex simulations workflows used to look like: 1. Preload the model in the first step 2. Run each scenario as a separate study using Restart 3. Operate on multiple ODB files when creating report 4. Archive multiple ODBs 5. After a couple of weeks of (rightfully!) extolling the virtues of the new functionality in #LiteBox3D, it’s back to shining a spotlight on recently introduced features to #Abaqus for ‘Friday Freebie’. This week we focus on the *MANIFEST keyword – some functionality that’s been hiding in plain sight for a while and is now one of my firm favourites. As preamble then - everyone uses *RESTART already, right (No?!? Well, you should!). This functionality has been around, well, forever and is ideal for taking snapshots of the solution state for reuse by the solver so that the user can: ● Run additional loadcases/steps once the current job has finished, without having to run the whole simulation again ● Continue an analysis if ‘something went wrong’ (like a power cut, or the disk space ran out) ● Run multiple functional loadcases starting from a common assembly state, without running the assembly state steps again and again. The upside of using *RESTART in these scenarios is that the overall computation time can be drastically reduced.... but the downside is often in the housekeeping of the files from multiple restarts. Now, *MANIFEST can do many things (please look at the attached slides for a fuller overview), but one thing that it very usefully does is to combine all of the unique jobs you want to run from a common stressed base state into a single execution... which then means that all of the results for multiple ‘simulation branches’ from that base state are combined into a single file structure (and, yes, that includes the .odb file as well!). More than that, if any one of the analyses fails within the MANIFEST sequence, it won’t stop the simulation overall: the next analysis will smoothly start up and proceed (which is great for those Friday afternoon, 4:59pm analyses... we all do it....). If you use *RESTART already, *MANIFEST will hold no fear... and if you don’t use *RESTART already – as I’ve already said – you really should... 😊 #TECHNIA #TECHNIASimulation #SIMULIA #Abaqus #dassaultsystèmes #fea #simulation #mechanicalengineering
