It sure looks like people want a different approach to in-person tech events. There has been response to the event that Nicole Klug and I are hosting on July 18 in Toronto. It's a 50-person event focused on purposeful networking and connections. Our goal is to help you meet as many people as possible and spark new opportuniites. A great start to what we’re hoping will be an incredibly useful platform to develop a more informed engagement with AI. As Architects, we are often seen to be lagging behind the advancements made in other industries, using technologies that, at first glance, can appear a little confusing and perhaps even a little too complex. At ARC Design Studio, we’ve been working hard as a team to research, test, break, and review some of these emerging technologies. To make AI work for our practice. It’s of course still early days and, as a SME, we aren’t often in a position where we can setup a dedicated team to research and develop these technologies in house. So there are some major limitations here for small, independent businesses; particularly in regional cities like Nottingham. This is partly why we have decided to launch this event series. To build a community around a defined theme that can share knowledge, and discuss the opportunities and threats of AI across a broad range of industries. 🧠 Knowledge is power. 👥 And community is at the heart of both. "How AI is going to make us more human". This intriguing statement lured me into booking a ticket to #SouthSummit Madrid, in the hope of finding inspiration on how to guide Tunga into the AI-era. Rookie mistake! ⛔ After all, I knew that these kinds of trade shows are much more about networking than about the content. And that oddly enough tech events nowadays mainly revolve around startups finding funding and vice versa. It was a bit like going to a rock concert expecting 🎶classical music! My bad, but in the bigger scheme of things I wouldn’t call this a major setback. It has not been the first time that I ended up in the wrong place and over the years I’ve learned to make the most out of such situations. It was time to deploy a technique that I have named: 👉The Bird-Of-Paradise Effect This name was inspired by a BBC series, Planet Earth: The Making Of. The film crew had to sit silently in a tent in the Indonesian bush for six weeks to capture the mating dance of the paradise bird. Six weeks! Talk about patience. Similarly, even at events that don't seem tailored for you, there are hidden gems if you're patient enough. That one insightful presentation, a prospect you meet at the buffet, or that overdressed corporate executive that uncontrollably dances on the table after having a beer too many at the afterparty 🍺. They're the moments that can make even the most mismatched event worthwhile. Last week at South Summit that highlight for me was the keynote by Mateo Nicolás Salvatto, a 25 years young entrepreneur from Argentina. His company built an app called Hablalo, that helps people with difficulties to communicate verbally and with hearing problems to handle daily life with greater ease. He showed us that making real impact in the end is about what YOU can do for an actual other human being ♥️. And so, perhaps I found my answer after all. AI is not going to make us more human in the same way that cars didn’t make us spend less time traveling. It might change the context, but the choice to be more human is ours to make! #AI #TechEvents #SocialImpact
